Computer plays Gotye cover, If you thought the cover-mashup of other covers of Gotye's 'Somebody That I Used to Know' was as meta as this internet trend could get, just wait.
After the song exploded earlier this summer, it seemed like there wasn't a corner of the internet you could crawl into without hearing the pop smash.
Now, it seems the sum has become so popular that it's transcended the digital bounds of the internet and become a part of the very machines themselves.
This latest cover uses an HP Scanjet 3C, 2 hard drives, and a xylophone to reproduce the Gotye hit. Of course, the composer clearly didn't use a modem to compose any portion of the song – if he had a working internet connection, he'd know we only care about 'Gangnam Style' covers now.
Puppy pogos through cornfield, We can't get enough of adorable dogs-leaping-through-the-fields videos. And who are you kidding — you can't either, right?
So we couldn't resist this clip of an exceptionally excitable pup bounding through some cornfields.
Actually, 'bounding' is putting it mildly; this dog is essentially pogo-ing through the fields, disappearing from sight every few seconds before popping up joyfully again into mid-air.
Though the vid is from December, it's resurfaced and animal-vid addicts (like us) are loving it all over again, just proving our theory that it's impossible to ever get enough of happy dog videos.
Nazi-stolen Buddhist statue made from meteorite, The Nazis already stole their swastika symbol from the Buddhists, but also nicked a priceless statue from Tibet - carved from meteorite - it emerged today.
New research has proved that the 1000 year old figure is made from the falling star which crashed into the Earth 15,00 years ago. Tests have shown the image of Buddhist King of the North, Vaisravana, contains an incredibly rare form of nickel-rich iron - only present in stars.
The carving was looted by the Nazis from Tibet by Hitler's army in the 1930s, while they were 'searching for the origins of the Aryan race' - and was hidden in a private collection, until it was auctioned in 2007.
The new owner then approached Dr Elmar Buchner of University of Stuttgart to uncover the truth behind his win. Scientists have now revealed the relic is made from a meteorite that fell on the broder of Siberia and Mongolia between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago.
"If we are right that it was made in the Bon culture in the 11th century, it is absolutely priceless and absolutely unique worldwide," Buchner said.
Bagel Heads Asia's new body modification trend,A recent trend in body modification is implanting objects, such as magnets, in the skin. Why is beyond me, but apparently something small and barely noticeable isn’t good enough for some Japanese individuals. Introducing “bagel heads.”
Yes, it is exactly what it sounds like, though there are a few differences between the process and standard body modifications. Instead of an actual object being placed in the skin, a saline solution drip is used to cause inflammation and swelling in various parts of the body.
For many, the result is a large, bagel-shaped “implant” on the forehead. Tankfully, it’s a temporary modification, lasting only around 24 hours or so before wearing off.

30 year fixed mortgage rates,Average U.S. rates on fixed mortgages fell again to new record lows. The decline suggests the Federal Reserve's stimulus efforts may be having an impact on mortgage rates.
Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday that the rate on the 30-year loan dropped to 3.40 percent. That's down from last week's rate of 3.49 percent, which was the lowest since long-term mortgages began in the 1950s.
The average on the 15-year fixed mortgage, a popular refinancing option, fell to 2.73 percent, down from the record low of 2.77 percent last week.
Brig. Gen. Jeffrey A. Sinclair,An Army brigadier general who served five combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan has been charged with forcible sodomy, multiple counts of adultery and having inappropriate relationships with several female subordinates, two U.S. defense officials said Wednesday.
The defense officials spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to provide details on the case.
Brig. Gen. Jeffrey A. Sinclair faces possible courts martial on charges that include forced sex, wrongful sexual conduct, violating an order, possessing pornography and alcohol while deployed, and misusing a government travel charge card and filing fraudulent claims.
Sinclair, who served as deputy commander in charge of logistics and support for the 82nd Airborne Division in Afghanistan, was sent home in May because of the allegations, the officials said. Since he returned to the U.S.,

Mars discovery:Curiosity Rover To Examine Pyramid-Shaped Boulder, NASA Says,Curiosity's robotic arm is set to get its first workout. It's been tasked with examining a football-sized rock whose odd pyramidal shape caught the eyes of NASA scientists--and fueled the imagination of earthlings everywhere who are perhaps a tad too eager for the rover to find evidence of intelligent life on the Red Planet.
"The target rock looks like a miniature Great Pyramid of Giza, with one face artisans neglected to maintain," noted The Christian Science Monitor. "It is not something you would expect to see on the surface of Mars," wrote the Daily Mail.
NYC horse meat,Giddy up, horse meat is coming to Queens! After what seems like ages (or maybe just a year and some change) much-loved but short-lived Canadian Long Island City diner M. Wells is coming back to us with this week's opening of M. Wells Dinette inside MoMA P.S. 1. And hold on to your saddles, because Grub Street has an interesting tidbit to share. Seems Chef Hugue Dufour is planning on having "A sushi display case [that] will serve as Dufour’s horse-tartare—yes, horse—station" where "There’ll be a hand grinder inside covered with meat."
When we called the restaurant to double check that fact—because, horse meat—we were told that yes, they would eventually be serving horse but that it wasn't going to be happening just yet. Further, they told us it wasn't a priority.
Samuel l. Jackson,Samuel L. Jackson riffs on his badass big-screen persona, as well as on a certain irreverent bedtime story for parents, in a new pro-Obama campaign spot that went viral on Thursday.
Setting the scene with a booming voice-over, Jackson tells the woeful tale of an American family that was politically active in 2008 but has since fallen into apathy, just like their neighbors.
"They're warm in their beds, snuggled up in their sheets/But four years before they were out in the streets," the actor says with disdain.
Except, that is, for Little Susie, the pint-sized activist heroine of this clip, who shoulders the task of getting her family, as Jackson puts it, to "wake the fuck up.
Honey Boo Boo,The TLC network said Wednesday that it has ordered Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas specials focusing on its seven-year-old breakout star, Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson. The series airs its 10th and final episode of its debut season on Wednesday.
The show centers around Thompson, her mother June Shannon and their rural Georgia family and has been a breakout hit for the cable network. Thompson's outgoing personality and catchphrases like "A dolla makes me holla" made her a star, although some critics suggest the show mocks small-town Southern life.
TLC has also ordered additional episodes of the series to air next spring.

Hotel of doom,Construction of the Ryugyong hotel in Pyongyang, North Korea, began in 1987 — but was halted for 16 years by a lack of funds. The still-unfinished 105-story skyscraper has become something of a symbol of that nation's "thwarted ambitions," as the BBC says.
But thanks to Koryo Tours, which runs trips to the communist state, we do have some new photos of the ominous-looking "Hotel of Doom." The company has posted some shots on Facebook and has shared them with the Associated Press. Koryo tells the BBC that the hotel may finally be finished in two or three years. Unless the money runs out again, of course.

Kelly Osbourne manicure, hen Kelly Osbourne decided to get a $250,000 black diamond manicure for the 2012 Emmys, she was probably more nervous about carrying so much cash on her nails than about the reaction she'd receive. But turns out fans weren't so keen on her extravagant nail varnish -- now she's backtracked and has apologized for the seemingly misguided beauty treatment.

Obama Romney polls,Republican Mitt Romney is struggling in swing-state Iowa at a perilous point: just as voters here start casting early ballots in the presidential race.
President Barack Obama has a clear lead in Iowa opinion polls, helped by the fact that the state's economy is far more robust than other battleground states. The president's polling edge is so wide it has prompted grumbling among Iowa Republicans who fault Romney for failing to take advantage of Obama's standing, which had been weakened in the four years since Iowa launched his bid for the White House in 2008.
West Nile virus,As of September 25, 2012, 48 states have reported West Nile virus infections in people, birds, or mosquitoes. A total of 3,545 cases of West Nile virus disease in people, including 147 deaths, have been reported to CDC. Of these, 1,816 (51%) were classified as neuroinvasive disease (such as meningitis or encephalitis) and 1,729 (49%) were classified as non-neuroinvasive disease.
The 3,545 cases reported thus far in 2012 is the highest number of West Nile virus disease cases reported to CDC through the last week in September since 2003. Seventy percent of the cases have been reported from eight states (Texas, Mississippi, South Dakota, Michigan, California, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Illinois) and 38 percent of all cases have been reported from Texas.

Boy wins peace prize,The obstacles seemed insurmountable for a 13-year-old Filipino street kid. Forced to scavenge for his survival from the age of 2, sleep in a coffin and run away to seek help after he was badly injured, Cris "Kesz" Valdez had every reason to merely look out for himself.
But at age 7, he started a foundation, the Championing Community Children charity, to help fellow homeless kids, and his selfless work has been recognized with the $130,000 Children's Peace Prize.
Home prices again,The housing market continues to gather strength, and the biggest gains in price now appear to be among the least expensive homes, whose values fell the most in the downturn and have weighed against any would-be recovery.
Over all, the Standard & Poor’s Case-Shiller index showed an annual gain of 1.2 percent in the price of single-family homes across 20 cities in July, according to data released Tuesday. In addition, all 20 cities showed price increases from the previous month, the third monthly gain in a row, supporting the idea that the nation’s housing market has bottomed out and, some analysts said, contributing to an unexpected bump in consumer confidence.

Kelly Osbournes manicure,Kelly Osbourne might have gotten a lot of attention on Emmy night for her perfectly fitted Zac Posen lavender gown, but unbelievably, it's her nails that cost more than her designer dress.

"About to get a $250k manicure w nail polis made w blk diamonds by @azature so excited & honored but absolutely s—ing myself to have that much money on my nails!," she tweeted before the show.

Eunuchs live longer,Castration had a huge effect on the lifespans of Korean men, according to an analysis of hundreds of years of eunuch "family" records.
They lived up to 19 years longer than uncastrated men from the same social class and even outlived members of the royal family.
The researchers believe the findings show male hormones shorten life expectancy.
The study is published in the journal Current Biology.
Castration before puberty prevents the shift from boy to man. One of the scientists involved in the study, Dr Cheol-Koo Lee from Korea University, said: "The records said that eunuchs had some women-like appearances such as no moustache hair, large breasts, big hips and thin high-pitched voice.

Peanut butter recall,The large-scale recall for Trader Joe's-brand Valencia peanut butter, announced Saturday, now applies to nut butter sold under 14 different brand names at stores around the country, including almond butter and peanut butter with flaxseed sold under Target's in-store brand Archer Farms.
So far, only the Trader Joe's peanut butter has been linked to salmonella illnesses. But butters from all the named brands were made on the same line of a factory owned by Portales, N.M.-based nut butter maker Sunland Inc., so the company opted to pull all the possibly affected products from shelves. Sunland spokeswoman Katalin Coburn described the move as "a huge and possibly overkill step" in a conversation with The Huffington Post, but she also noted that the salmonella strain found in the Trader Joe's peanut butter had been identified as "particularly cunning" and hard to detect by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
BBC queen Elizabeth,The BBC has apologized to Britain's Queen Elizabeth II after a reporter revealed the monarch was "pretty upset" that British officials had failed to arrest radical Muslim cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri.
Usually private conversations with members of Britain's royal family remain private. But in an extraordinary breach of this convention on BBC Radio 4, security correspondent Frank Gardner said the queen told him she had asked a government official why Hamza remained at large during his days as the imam of a mosque in London.
The revelation that the queen had personally lobbied a government official over Hamza, convicted in Britain for soliciting murder and inciting hatred in 2006, came as Gardner was discussing Hamza's probable extradition to the U.S. on terror charges.
Speaking to Today program host James Naughtie, Gardner said: "Actually, I can tell you that the queen was pretty upset that he was, this man was, there was no way to arrest him. She couldn't understand why -- surely there must have been some law he must have broken.
Madonna Endorses Obama,Madonna was in the nation's capital last night for her MDNA Tour, where she delivered an odd endorsement of President Barack Obama, at one point even referring to him incorrectly as a "black Muslim."

Now that's some amazing s**t," the 54-year-old told her fans in the packed Verizon Center during a minutes-long speech about the Civil Rights Movement and fighting for freedom. "It means there is hope in this country. And Obama is fighting for gay rights, so support the man, goddamnit."
Madonna has showed support for the president in the past. During the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., Madonna was performing in New York City, where she unveiled an "OBAMA" tattoo painted across her lower back. The pop singer has been an Obama supporter since 2008.

Real housewives of new jersey,First of all I have to admit I spend way WAY too much time analyzing the antics of the Housewife. They are an odd specimen, aren't they? Pregnant model on runway,Most women who are six months pregnant probably wouldn't be caught dead in a bikini, let alone as the center of attention in an international fashion show.
But that's exactly what 24-year-old Italian model, Raffaella Fico, did Saturday at Milan Fashion Week.
The six-months-pregnant Fico showed lots of skin modeling rather skimpy two-piece swimsuits for Pin-Up Stars, a line created by Italian designer Jerry Tommolini.
Fico proudly strutted down the runway in two different belly-baring looks, one strapless yellow bandeau top with matching bottom, and one white bikini with a monkey face on each breast cup. But despite her surprisingly calm, cool and collected catwalk appearance, her pregnancy has been marred by a publicly rocky relationship with the alleged father.
In July, Fico's former boyfriend, Italian soccer star Mario Balotelli, demanded in a statement that he would only "accept full responsibility" for the child if a DNA test proved he was the father.

iphone 5 sales,Shocking no one, Apple (AAPL) announced on Monday that its brand new iPhone 5 smartphone set a new record for opening-weekend sales. The company confirmed that during the device’s first three days of availability, Apple and its retail partners managed to sell more than 5 million iPhone 5 handsets including preorders. Apple also said more than 100 million iOS device owners updated to iOS 6 since the new OS was released last week.
The new iPhone launched Friday, September 21st following heavy demand that saw launch-day preorder inventory sell out in less than one hour at Apple.com. Apple announced last week that it sold more than 2 million iPhones during the smartphone’s first 24 hours of availability.
Early estimates suggested Apple could sell as many as 10 million new iPhones during the handset’s debut weekend, and Apple’s stock is down 2.24% in pre-market trading as a result.

Gwen Stefani no doubt,When the members of No Doubt got together again to make new music, something unexpected came with them: a bit of doubt.
It had been 11 years since they'd put out "Rock Steady" and their priorities had changed. Each of the four had gotten married and had kids, producing eight babies between them. Music was no longer the most important thing in their lives.
Could they still make it work?
"That's pretty complicated stuff when you start to really look at it," 42-year-old lead singer and lyricist Gwen Stefani says. "You're playing this role your whole life — the singer of No Doubt — totally committed to this in the greatest kind of way, and then all of a sudden, you're saying, 'Actually, you guys cannot be No. 1 anymore or else this is not going to work.

Urinary Tract Iinfection Sexual Intercourse, Sexual Behavior. Frequent or recent sexual activity is the most important risk factor for urinary tract infection in young women. Nearly 80% of all urinary tract infections in premenopausal women occur within 24 hours of intercourse. UTIs are very rare in celibate women. However, UTIs are NOT sexually transmitted infections.
In general, it is the physical act of intercourse itself that produces conditions that increase susceptibility to the UTI bacteria, with some factors increasing the risk:
Women having sex for the first time or who have intense and frequent sex after a period of abstinence are at risk for a condition called "honeymoon cystitis."
Sexual position (such as the woman on top) may contribute to the risk. The diaphragm
Click the icon to see an image of a diaphragm.
Certain types of contraceptives can also increase the risk of UTIs. In particular, women who use diaphragms tend to develop UTIs. The spring-rim of the diaphragm can bruise the area near the bladder, making it susceptible to bacteria. Spermicidal foam or gel used with diaphragms, and spermicidal-coated condoms, also increase susceptibility to UTIs. Most spermicides contain nonoxynol-9, a chemical that is associated with increased UTI risk.
Pregnancy. Although pregnancy does not increase the rates of asymptomatic bacteriuria, it does increase the risk that it will progress to a full-blown kidney infection, which can cause early labor and other serious pregnancy complications. (However in early pregnancy, frequent urination -- a common symptom of UTI -- is most likely due to pressure on the bladder.) For this reason, pregnant women should be screened and treated for asymptomatic bacteriuria.

This could result from a child running full force into your outstretched hand, for example. Skiers often are injured when their thumb catches in the pole. Gamekeepers used to end up with this injury from snapping rabbit’s necks; in their case, the injury was chronic, with the damage accumulating over a number of months.
Location of the Thumb MCP Joint Injury
Ligaments attach one bone to another. The ulnar collateral ligament is located at the base of the thumb, near the V-crease where the thumb and index finger meet, on the inside of the thumb. The ligament attaches two bones, the proximal and distal phalanx, to each other at the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint. The distal phalanx is the second bone in the thumb; the proximal phalanx begins where the thumb meets the V between the thumb and first fingers.
Dead Butt Syndrome, Dead Butt Syndrome, Dead butt syndrome sounds more dramatic than it actually is. The condition is caused by inflammation in the gluteus medius muscles, which play a crucial role in hip and pelvis stability. If you've been diagnosed with dead butt syndrome, rest assured that you can revitalize your gluteal muscles with consistent exercise. Work with a physical therapist if possible to strengthen your muscles safely and effectively.
Identification
Dead butt syndrome is characterized by several common symptoms. Runners who have the condition often experience severe hip pain during and after running for short or long distances. Because the gluteus medius muscle controls the pelvis as well as the hips, people who have dead butt syndrome also may walk with a wobbling or lurching gait. When standing still, patients tend to shift the majority of their weight over one hip. If the problem is left untreated, it may affect other areas, such as the knees, Achilles tendon, calves and feet.

Double amputee in wheelchair shot dead by houston police,A double amputee in a wheelchair was shot and killed by Houston police after threatening an officer with what turned out to be a pen, local media reported on Sunday.
The shooting took place early Saturday morning at a home for the mentally ill. An employee called police to report that resident Brian Claunch was acting aggressively against a caretaker who refused to give him a cigarette and a soda, the Houston Chronicle reported.
Claunch, who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, had lost an arm and a leg in a train accident and was sitting in a wheelchair. He trapped a policeman in a corner with his wheelchair and tried to stab him with an object later identified as a silver pen, the Chronicle said.
When Claunch refused police orders to drop the object, the trapped officer's partner shot and killed him, the newspaper said.

Panda national zoo,But Malinsky decided to check anyhow. She fired up her laptop and logged on to the camera that had been intently trained on Mei for the past few weeks. She couldn’t see much, but she could hear the panda panting. She also heard a strange squeaking noise in the background.
Maybe there was something wrong with the camera, she thought. She logged off, and logged back on again. The squeaking continued. Then it hit her. This wasn’t a glitch. These were the squeals of a cub.
Imfao break up
Imfao break up,LMFAO's Redfoo is still party rocking, but these days, he's doing it without his partner-in-fun, Sky Blu.
Redfoo says he and Sky Blu – who is also his nephew – are taking a break as they focus on their own interests, personally and professionally.
"I feel like we've been doing this for so long, five or six years. And we're kind of like saying, well, let's just do what's natural and just kind of explore that, instead of like forcing it all the time," Redfoo, 37, explained in a phone interview earlier this week.
For the wild-haired Redfoo, his explorations have not only taken him to record new music solo, they have also opened up a world in sports.
Earlier this month, he was in the stands at the U.S. Open rooting on new BFF Victoria Azarenka, who lost to Serena Williams for the women's championship.

De quervain tenosynovitis treated with rest + modified activities,I have Dequervain's in my right thumb. It is getting progressively more of a problem to the point where I have trouble gripping anything like a knife, brush, etc. as well as pain whenever I jerk the hand or put pressure on it. My chiro/therapist is treating it with ultra sound which helps somewhat to keep it to a dull roar. Previously he was using electrical stimulation which seemed to me to make it worse. I have kept it at bay with Flector patches cut in triangles to wrap my thumb overnight but insurance is no longer going to cover that. I've used SalonPas which also eases it a bit. I tried a compounded NSAID Rx cream but that was mostly useless. I know the next step is usually cortisone injections by a hand specialist but injected cortisone and I have never gotten along well in the past.

Pig saves baby goat, Things were looking pretty grim at the petting zoo after a baby goat got its foot stuck underwater. As an onlooker filmed, the young animal struggled to keep its head above water. But, suddenly, something comes into the corner of the screen. It’s a pig, and it’s swimming toward the trapped goat. With one swift push, the pig frees the goat from what would’ve become its watery grave. Hasselhoff’s got nothing on this swine! Then the two animals swim together to shore. “And there he is, the hero pig,” says the cameraman, with his lens trained on the quick-thinking oinker. Not since ‘Babe’ has a pig so captured our imagination. This may even make us feel a bit guilty the next time we eat bacon.
American Airlines Flights Cancel,September 21, 2012 (DALLAS) -- American Airlines and American Eagle say they will cancel 300 flights this week to cope with a high number of pilots reporting sick and an increase in maintenance reports filed by crews.
That's 1.25 percent of the 24,000 flights that were scheduled by the two airlines, which are owned by AMR Corp.
The two airlines had already canceled 249 flights this week by Wednesday afternoon, a flight-tracking service said, suggesting that cancelations might far exceed American's estimate.
AMR said Wednesday that it canceled the flights in advance to avoid inconveniencing passengers. Earlier this week, American said it would cut its schedule through the end of October by up to 2 percent.
American has seen an increase in flight cancelations since early this month, when a federal bankruptcy judge allowed the company to impose new pay and work rules on pilots. The pilots had rejected the company's last contract offer in August.
Each day this week, American has canceled more flights than any U.S. airline, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware.
Texas town rental ban, A Dallas suburb's long, expensive fight to ban illegal immigrants from renting homes will get perhaps its most important hearing Wednesday before a largely conservative group of judges with the power to influence the national immigration debate.
Farmers Branch was sued four years ago after it passed an ordinance allowing the city building inspector to evict any illegal immigrant renters. Its case will now go before the full membership of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, with 10 judges appointed by Republican presidents and just five by Democrats.
So far, no court has allowed Farmers Branch to enforce any form of the ordinance. But the appeals court's rare move to hear the case a second time, months after a different three-judge panel ruled against Farmers Branch, could be a sign that the town might finally get a victory.
The current ordinance, which replaced an earlier 2006 version, would require all renters to obtain a $5 city license and fill out an application that asks about their legal status. Then, the city's building inspector would have to check whether any immigrant applying for a license was in the United States legally. Illegal immigrants would be denied a permit, and landlords who knowingly allow illegal immigrants to stay as tenants could be fined or have their renters' license barred.
The appeals court has directed all sides to focus on the U.S. Supreme Court's June ruling on Arizona's tough immigration law. That ruling rejected major parts of the law, but upheld the so-called "show me your papers" requirement, which gives law enforcement authority to check a person's legal status if officers have reasonable suspicion he or she is in the U.S. illegally.
Paul Ryan politician,For better or worse, coverage of newly designated Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan includes his fitness choices. Everyone from The Daily Beast to Politico has devoted space to Ryan’s enthusiasm for the fitness workout regimen, P90X. And, according to a series of articles in Politico last year, Ryan has encouraged colleagues to get in on the interval training system, a 90-day series that relies on a strategy called “muscle confusion” to tone muscle and encourage fat loss. "Nothing against rock hard abs,” joked Rachel Maddow in a segment devoted to news organizations' enthusiasm for covering the Congressional P90x fad. “I plan to get those after I learn Spanish. But 10 articles [on P90X in Congress] from the premier Beltway news source?” Ryan is hardly the only politician to go public with his fitness preferences. President Barack Obama and the First Lady regularly mention their morning training sessions and pick up basketball games. Former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush were often seen jogging, in what is hardly a modern phenomenon: Theodore Roosevelt trained with a Jiu Jitsu master during his presidency and Gerald Ford -- who turned down offers to play professional football in the NFL after graduating from University of Michigan, where he was an All-American college player -- was known for his skiing, swimming, golf and tennis playing while president. Still, if Ryan’s bid were successful, he may be the first VP to claim devotion to TV fitness. Often thought of as the provenance of busy working parents in suburban living rooms, P90X and other programs like it, have devoted followings, even among those with the resources for personal trainers and home gymnasiums.
Hero pig saves drowning goat, In the video, a small pig becomes a hero when it dives into a petting zoo pond to save a drowning baby goat.
This video made our day, though no one will credit the cameraman with being a hero. At the beginning of the tape, he simply says, "goat in the water," and then continues to film while the animal struggles to stay above water.
That's when the brave pig dashes into the water, heading straight for the baby goat and nudging it toward the shore. The two animals climb back onto the shore and go about their business.
The video then cuts to the pig, back to its normal routine, with the cameraman declaring, "And there he is, the hero pig."

Yoko Ono bestows peace grant on Pussy Riot, Yoko Ono and Amnesty International awarded the Russian punk band Pussy Riot this year’s LennonOno grant for peace. Ono presented the award to Pyotr Verzilov, husband of Nadia Tolokonnikova — one of three imprisoned members of Pussy Riot sentenced in August to two years in prison for performing an irreverent song mocking Russian President Vladimir Putin inside Moscow’s main cathedral. ‘‘It’s a terrible thing that all three girls have been jailed for not doing anything wrong. They were just standing for freedom of speech,’’ Ono said at a ceremony in New York City. Verzilov thanked Ono, saying the grant increased international pressure on Russian authorities to release the women. The LennonOno Grant for Peace is given every two years to honor Yoko Ono’s late husband John Lennon’s dedication to peace and human rights.
Fat cat named Skinny up for adoption in Texas,Don't be fooled by the name: Skinny the cat is one hefty feline. And all 41 pounds of her needs a home. A Dallas-area animal shelter has cared for the 5-year-old orange tabby since getting a call about a stray in a yard about a week ago. Kim Chapin with Richardson Animal Services said Friday that Skinny's "very sweet" — and the largest cat she's seen in 21 years with the shelter. Not surprising. U.S. government growth charts show Skinny weighs about as much as the average 4-year-old child. Chapin says Skinny appears healthy except for being overweight and likely having diabetes. Blood tests have been ordered. Chapin says somebody apparently had been caring for the cat but officials aren't sure who owned the huge kitty.

libya.* benghazi crowds drive out islamist militants, Cheering crowds swept through the Libyan city of Benghazi clearing Islamist militias from their bases after protests triggered by the killing of the American ambassador, Chris Stevens.
Up to four people were reported dead in clashes which broke out when the last and biggest militia was attacked in the early hours of Saturday morning. Earlier, members of Ansar al-Sharia, the militant group accused of responsibility for Mr Stevens' death, were forced out of their strongholds in the city.
The deaths and promises of retribution by militia leaders presage more trouble to come. But for the moment the headquarters of the freelance groups that have held sway in Benghazi since the revolution that toppled Col Muammar Gaddafi are claimed to be in the hands of police and army units loyal to the newly elected prime minister, Mustafa Abushagur.
The protests in Benghazi on Friday evening, estimated at 30,000-strong, featured pro-American slogans and banners, unusual for demonstrations in Arab countries. Though many protesters said they were attending "for Benghazi, not for America", some held up placards commemorating Mr Stevens, who lived in Benghazi last year while co-ordinating American support for the revolution.
"We demand justice for Stevens," said one, and "Libya lost a friend" another.
The march was given the title "Rally to Save Benghazi". Its aim and that of another, smaller demonstration in Tripoli was to demand the government, which Mr Abushagur is still forming, take control of security in the country and disband the militias or co-opt them into the army under a unified structure.
Initial fears of violence between marchers and a counter-demonstration by members of Ansar al-Sharia proved unfounded as the Islamists were heavily outnumbered. They have denied killing Mr Stevens, but said he was preparing the way for American intervention in Libya, and also referred to the anti-Islam film circulating the internet.
But after the rally ended, some of the protesters, with police and army apparently in support, marched on Ansar al-Sharia bases. They cleared them from in front of the Al-Jala Hospital, which they had been guarding, so that by late evening the anti-aircraft guns mounted on pick-up trucks that had been the basis of hospital security had disappeared.
Kate Middleton look alike, All eyes are on Kate Middleton as she prepares for her April 29, 2011 wedding to Prince William, and one British woman in particular has found that she's had her own share of double-takes, with people thinking that she's the princess-to-be! "I could definitely get used to this princess lifestyle," Kate Bevan tells ET. "I'm living every girl's dream, to be honest." The 21-year-old Bevan is a stunning look-alike to Middleton, and the Brit is basking in the attention of her coincidental look with her own dose of fame and photo shoots – without the palace pressure. In fact, she quit her job as a pharmaceutical assistant for a new life as a Kate Middleton look-alike! "It's such a fun job, it's something I couldn't miss out on," she says. Despite the remarkable royal resemblance, Bevan hasn't heard from her more famous counterpart, but in the meantime she's been working on mastering her upper class accent for the new gig. "I'm from the West Midlands and I've got a Dudley accent; Kate is very polished English, so if I wanted to do appearances it would have to be the whole package," says Bevan. "I'd love to meet her one day. That would be great." Bevan says that ever since the prince announced his proposal to his longtime girlfriend, interest in her has "snowballed" and she already feels like a celebrity. "I'm sure I've got a much busier time ahead of me going into the wedding," she says. "She's going to be around for a while. She's not a star that's going to fade." But just in case, Bevan says optimistically, "If all else fails there's always my pharmacy work ... and I wouldn't have given it up if it wasn't for this Kate Middleton work, so that's always something to go back into."
Texas town rental ban, A Dallas suburb asked a federal appeals court Wednesday to uphold an ordinance that would ban illegal immigrants from renting homes in the town.
The full 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed to rehear the case after a three-judge panel from the court ruled in March that Farmers Branch's ordinance is unconstitutional and impermissibly interferes with the federal immigration system.
The court's 15 judges didn't indicate when they would rule after hearing arguments Wednesday from attorneys for the town and a group of landlords and tenants who sued to block the ordinance's enforcement.
Arguments largely focused on how the case is affected by a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in June on Arizona's tough immigration law. That ruling rejected major parts of the law, but upheld the so-called "show me your papers" requirement, which gives law enforcement authority to check a person's legal status if officers have reasonable suspicion he or she is in the U.S. illegally.
Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, a national advocate for tougher illegal immigration laws who is also representing Farmers Branch, said that provision of the Arizona law closely mirrors a key portion of the Texas town's ordinance.
"The problem with the plaintiffs' argument is that they cannot identify a single federal statute that the Farmers Branch ordinance conflicts with," he said.
The ordinance, which replaced an earlier 2006 version, would require all renters to obtain a $5 city license and fill out an application that asks about their legal status. Then, the city's building inspector would have to check whether any immigrant applying for a license was in the United States legally. Illegal immigrants would be denied a permit, and landlords who knowingly allow illegal immigrants to stay as tenants could be fined or have their renters' license barred.
Kobach said the ordinance explicitly bars the town from making its own determination about whether someone is "lawfully present" in the U.S.
"It must always be done by the federal government," he said.
O.J. Simpson is making headlines again nearly 20 years after his trial for the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ron Goldman. The New York Post's Cindy Adams reported Thursday that Simpson's famously freeloading houseguest, Kato Kaelin, said O.J. did, in fact, kill his ex-wife back in 1994. But now Kaelin says that report is bogus. Kaelin told TMZ he was shocked when he read Adams' story. While he believes O.J. killed his ex-wife and Goldman, he said he has no "first-hand knowledge" about the Juice's guilt, TMZ reported. This quote from Adams is false, Kaelin reportedly claims: "The statute of limitations has now passed ... so I can now say ... yes, he did it." Adams reported that Kaelin was too scared to come forward earlier. Kaelin – who shared a first name with Nicole Simpson's dog, Kato – refused to directly implicate O.J. during the criminal trial and was even dubbed a hostile witness by the prosecution, the Chicago Tribune reported in 1995. But not everyone says O.J. did it:
Kathy Griffin no makeup,Kathy Griffin has no problem going makeup-free around her boyfriend. The 51-year-old comedienne looked nearly unrecognizable on Wednesday while going for a hike at Runyon Ranch in Los Angeles, but she proudly flaunted her makeup-face for photographers. Griffin had a huge smile on her face as she held boyfriend Randy Bick's hand during their workout. The outspoken star wore a Jimmy Kimmel Live T-shirt, blue running shorts, sneakers and styled her hair in a messy bun on top of her head. Bick matched his girlfriend in a blue shirt, athletic shorts and black sneakers -- and a big grin! According to Daily Mail, Bick, 33, and Griffin have been dating for quite some time but only took their relationship public the beginning of this year. "I truly tried to keep [the relationship] under wraps," Griffin told Daily Mail. "He's a really nice normal guy with a nice normal job who doesn't care for the spotlight, and I like it that way and he does too."

Lucien Bouchard not pleased with PQ, his old party, A former Quebec premier is not very happy with his old party, only two days into its term in office. Lucien Bouchard has issued a statement condemning comments about shale gas made by the new Parti Quebecois government. While an environmental review process is only barely underway, the minister responsible for the industry has said it can never be developed safely. Bouchard, who was a popular former leader of the PQ, is now the president of the Quebec Oil and Gas Association. He calls the comments from Martine Ouellet confusing and, in a statement, has asked six questions he says the minister raised with those remarks. In interviews he gave after the Sept. 4 provincial election, Bouchard had already criticized some of his old party's campaign promises and he suggested it was time to focus on priorities other than achieving independence. The PQ took office Wednesday. The remarks about shale gas also drew criticism from another ex-leader of the PQ, Andre Boisclair, who also works for the industry.

Kato Kaelin's O.J. denial, Kato Kaelin said on 'The View' (weekdays, syndicated) that he still believes O.J. Simpson is guilty of the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. And he also believes that the 33-year sentence Simpson is serving for kidnapping and armed robbery is the result of a circle of bad friends and "karma." "My opinion is, I thought he was guilty," Kaelin said of Simpson's 1995 murder trial, adding that he still believes that today. Kaelin also said he's not surprised Simpson is currently incarcerated. "I think he was hanging around the wrong group [and] that was going to catch up to him," he said. "I'm a big believer in karma, and I think that karma just came around."
MPs question motive for call to debate when life begin, Victims of stalkers could win new protection following completion of a major inquiry, which will this week recommend that a specific offence of stalking be created to combat the problem.
An all-party parliamentary group is to publish a report into its six-month investigation, arguing for a change in legislation that will see perpetrators given substantial prison sentences for any abuse, whether emotional or physical, that has been endured by their victims. The findings pre-empt a separate Home Office inquiry, which completes its consultation on how to protect stalking victims today.
Support for a new law in England and Wales is growing. David Cameron has already conceded that there is a gap in the current protection for stalking victims, while Home Office ministers Theresa May and Lynne Featherstone are understood to be sympathetic to demands for new legislation.
Elfyn Llwyd MP, chairman of the parliamentary group – which heard evidence from lawyers, psychologists, academics and the parents of murdered stalking victims – said: "We are very firmly of the view that there needs to be a change in the law. We've looked at other countries, such as the way Scotland has done it, and they have a law which resulted in several hundred successful prosecutions in the first year."
Llwyd, a former barrister, said it was critical that any changes to legislation be accompanied by an awareness campaign to ensure that crown prosecutors, police and the probation service begin to take the issue seriously. Of the estimated 120,000 cases of stalking each year, 53,000 are recorded as crimes by police and only one in 50 of these leads to an offender being jailed. High-profile cases include that of Clare Bernal, shot dead by her stalker in 2005 as she worked at the Harvey Nichols department store. Her murderer had been due in court the following week for harassing her.
"We need a commitment from government that the police are aware of the insidious and dangerous thing that stalking is," said Llwyd.
Judge Weds Couple Then Sentences Groom to Prison, A judge sentenced an Oklahoma man to four years in federal prison on a firearm charge — then minutes later performed a marriage ceremony to wed the new inmate and his longtime girlfriend. Thursday was a busy day for Larry Austin and Dustie Trojack. First they obtained their marriage license, then Austin pleaded guilty to the firearm charge and was sentenced by Oklahoma County Judge Jerry Bass. Shortly afterward, Bass married the happy couple who kissed before federal authorities whisked Austin away. Austin's attorney, Scott M. Anderson, tells The Oklahoman (http://is.gd/7kXI74 ) that Austin had helped to raise Trojack's two sons and he didn't want to lose contact with them while he was serving time.
Sub boss faked death , A Navy officer who was dismissed last month as commander of a
Connecticut-based nuclear submarine faked his own death to end an affair he was carrying on with a mistress, investigation documents show.
Navy Cmdr. Michael P. Ward II was relieved of his duties aboard the USS Pittsburgh a week after taking command of the attack submarine.
Investigators found that Ward sent his mistress an email from a fictitious person named Bob in July, posing as a co-worker and saying that Ward had died unexpectedly, according to a report obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press through a Freedom of Information Act request.
Navy Lt. Cmdr. Jennifer Cragg, a spokeswoman for the Pittsburgh's submarine group in Groton, said Ward has received a letter of reprimand for adultery and other military violations.
Details of the affair were first reported by The Day of New London.
Ward, a 43-year-old Buffalo native, is assigned to a submarine group in Groton. He has not responded to requests for comment.
The woman learned that Ward was still alive when she turned up at Ward's former residence in Burke, Va., to offer condolences. The new owner told her that Ward had moved to Connecticut to take command of a submarine.
Protester dies smoke burning U.S. flags – The news over the protests concerning the blasphemy related to the movie “Innocence of Muslims” has taken another sad death as a protester has died from inhaling smoke fumes from burning USA flags.
Protester dies smoke burning U.S. flags
Already far too many people have died after the trailer for a very amateur movie that insulted the Prophet Muhammed surfaced a week or so ago and now the latest death is actually that of an anti-American protester in Pakistan.
Now I know many people will be shouting that he deserves it blah blah blah but this man was another human who has had a needless death over the widening trouble surrounding this movie. Both sides in my opinion have done some serious wrong (the film maker and the protesters) and I am saddened this is polluting the news and causing so much trouble.
I have many Muslim friends, though am not Muslim myself, and a true Muslim mourns the death of anyone.
Shark saves man drifting at sea, The 41-year-old Kiribati policeman and father of six relived his harrowing voyage in the central
Pacific when he arrived in Majuro on Saturday, on the Marshall Islands fishing boat that picked him up last week.
He told of sleeping next to the body of his brother-in-law, who died during the ordeal. When he was found he was suffering severe dehydration and praying to be discovered alive.
Mr Teitoi’s drama began on May 27 after he had flown from his home island of Maiana to the Kiribati capital of Tarawa to be sworn in as a policeman. After the ceremony, he watched a film about four men from Kiribati who were lost at sea. Only two survived after being washed ashore in American Samoa six weeks later.
It was then that he changed his mind about flying home and joined his brother-in-law, Ielu Falaile, 52, on what was supposed to be a two-hour sea journey back to Maiana in a 4.5-metre wooden boat.
But after stopping to fish along the way and sleeping overnight, they woke the following day to find they had drifted out of sight of Maiana and soon after ran out of fuel.
“We had food, but the problem was we had nothing to drink,” he said.
As dehydration took hold, Mr Teitoi, a Catholic, said he turned to prayer as it gave him strength. But Falaile’s health began failing and he died on July 4.
“I left him there overnight and slept next to him like at a funeral,” Mr Teitoi said. He buried his brother-in-law at sea the next morning.
Heidi And Spencer Fake, Get your tissues out, Hills fans, because here’s a depressing tidbit that wasn’t included in Monday night’s crapola cram session: The Hills is one big sexy pile of fake. Admit it – you already knew this but just couldn’t bring yourself to acknowledge the (fake) truth. Sadly, our fave reality show is as made up as Santa Claus – just in a pair of Ray Bans with a lovely Louis Vuitton bag. Check out these pics taken yesterday of Heidi and Spencer staging an airport drop off and pick up at LAX. They change shirts to make it look like two different occasions, but the rest of their outfits are exactly the same.
This should come as no surprise, especially when the show’s executive producer has basically revealed that the show is staged. But rest assured dear fans, everything Lo does is 100% real, baby! There’s nothing fake about the way she says “Justin Bobby” or flashes her crotch for the cameras. She can’t help but be real – real effing nuts. Team Lo(co)!
Christina Aguilera’s Voice Hiatus, Christina Aguilera wants her fans to know that she won’t be slacking when it comes time to tour and promote her new album, “Lotus”, even if it means giving up her job on “The Voice” for a season. The album drops November 13th, and since the talent competition is filming back-to-back seasons, Aguilera is taking the next cycle off to concentrate on the release and tour.
“Being a coach on The Voice is a wonderful experience and the relationship amongst us all is like an extended family,” Aguilera said. “As I have expressed since day one of the show, that I am a singer and performer first and I am so excited to get back to that love. Since this year NBC and The Voice have decided to tape back-to-back seasons, requiring a full-year commitment, it is important for me to take Season 4 off, allowing me to support my music that my fans have been waiting for.”
Cee Lo Green will also be taking that cycle off to work on his own music and to develop a series for NBC based on his life. Filling in for the two stars will be Usher and Shakira, which has sparked rumors that Aguilera and Green are leaving permanently, but producers insist that isn’t so.
