Pastor Danny Kirk

by umer | 8:12 AM in |

Police worked into the night Monday trying to determine what caused a 33-year-old man to crash his car into a church here and then bludgeon the popular pastor to death with an electric guitar.

The church’s janitor was also beaten, though not severely, before the suspect died in the back of a
squad car several minutes after he had been shot with a Taser gun by police.

Authorities said the Rev. Danny Kirk, 53, pastor of Greater Sweethome Missionary Baptist Church, died at the scene of the late-morning attack in the suburb on the southeast side of Fort Worth. The janitor, 59-year-old John Whitaker, was treated for a broken jaw. A church secretary locked herself in her office to escape the 11:12 a.m. attack where she was able to call 911.

Caller: “I think someone’s trying to break in … it was like a loud crash … I need an ambulance also. My pastor’s bleeding. He’s been attacked.”

Operator: “So your pastor confronted him?”

Caller: “They’re trying to fight him.”

“They’re going in and out [of the church] like they’re chasing them. … My pastor and the custodian are chasing him … it looks like he drove his car into our building.”

Forest Hill police called in the Texas Rangers to lead the investigation. Two men who arrived at the church after the attack identified the attacker as Derrick Birdow and said he was their cousin. Forest Hill City Manager Shay Ipaye confirmed that Birdow was the assailant.

The cousins said they did not believe Birdow was a member of Greater Sweethome, but added that they thought his children are members.

Sandy's US toll climbs to 39; 8.2 million without power,Residents and businesses began a massive clean-up effort Tuesday, even as large parts of the region remained without power, and transportation in the New York metropolitan area was at a standstill.

The misery of superstorm Sandy's devastation grew Tuesday as millions along the U.S. East Coast faced life without power or mass transit for days, and huge swaths of New York City remained eerily quiet. The U.S. death toll climbed to 39, many of the victims killed by falling trees, and rescue work continued.

The storm that made landfall in New Jersey on Monday evening with hurricane force cut power to more than 8.2 million across the East and put the presidential campaign on hold just one week before Election Day.

New York was among the hardest hit, with its financial heart closed for a second day. The storm caused the worst damage in the 108-year history of the city's subway system, and there was no indication of when the largest U.S. transit system would be rolling again.

But the full extent of the damage in New Jersey was being revealed as morning arrived. Emergency crews fanned out to rescue hundreds.

A hoarse-voiced New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie gave bleak news at a morning news conference: Seaside rail lines washed away. No safe place on the state's barrier islands for him to land. Parts of the coast still under water.

Emanuel Steward boxing analyst HBO

by umer | 12:33 PM in |

Emanuel Steward boxing analyst HBO,  Emanuel Steward, who trained boxing champions Thomas Hearns, Lennox Lewis, Oscar De La Hoya and Wladimir Klitschko and analyzed fights as an HBO Sports ringside commentator since 2001, has died. He was 68.

Steward, owner of the fabled Kronk Gym in Detroit and an International Boxing Hall of Fame trainer, died Thursday at a Chicago hospital.

ESPN reported Friday that Steward had been hospitalized since September, causing him to miss two HBO broadcasts, and underwent surgery. His sister, Diane Steward Jones, said the surgery was for the stomach disorder diverticulitis, though many others who knew the trainer said it was for advanced cancer.

“Manny was a respected colleague who taught us so much not only about the sweet science but also about friendship and loyalty,” HBO Sports president Ken Hershman said. “His energy, enthusiasm and bright smile were a constant presence. Ten bells do not seem enough to mourn his passing.”

HBO Sports commentator Jim Lampley, who worked alongside Steward for more than a decade, said Steward’s wisdom and common touch made him special.

“He was the most loyal, generous, positive spirited, broadly accepting man I've ever known,” Lampley said. “He had a positive impact on everyone he encountered.”

Steward worked with current heavyweight champion Klitschko as recently as July when the boxer led 22,000 fans in singing “Happy Birthday” to the trainer.

The West Virginia native and amateur boxer trained actor Wesley Snipes for his role as a fighter inUndisputed (2002) and appeared briefly in Ocean's Eleven (2001) and The Fighter (2010).

HBO is scheduled to air a “Boxing After Dark” card on Saturday night.

Emanuel Steward Died While Recovering From Surgery,After much back and forth, the Detroit Free Press confirmed that legendary boxer Emanuel Steward did indeed die today. According to Steward’s sister Diane Steward-Jones, Steward died at 2:46 p.m. Detroit time at a Chicago-area hospital, after attempting to recover from surgery that was related to diverticulitis.

Stewart told the Detroit Free Press by phone, “He has passed – he’s gone home. He was in no pain, and we sang to him, as well as did the doctors present. He had loved ones around him.”

On Steward’s disposition during what would become the last days of his life, Steward-Jones said that her brother kept up his sense of humor by “recruiting” hospital staff for his boxing gym, “They loved him,” Steward-Jones said. “He’d tell them to lose some weight and fight for him.”

And in his final moments, Steward-Jones said he was cocooned in love, “He gave it his all,” she said. “But he’s been called away now.”

Reed, who was about to celebrate her 33rd birthday on the 28th, also starred alongside Gabrielle Union in the 2000 film Bring it On and appeared as herself in the 2003 film Honey. She leaves behind a son, ten-year-old Tren Brown, with rapper and one-time fiancé Kurupt.

The rap community has been tweeting words of support for the slain artist all day, costar Gabrielle Union tweeted a simple message of RIP, while fellow Blaque member Brandi Williams composed a heartfelt message: “Last night the world was changed forever, life will never be the same….she was my sister.”

Terry Callier Computer Programmer

by umer | 12:18 PM in |

Terry Callier Computer Programmer, Soul and jazz singer Terry Callier has died. The 67-year-old songwriter experienced belated success in his career after working with acts including Massive Attack and Beth Orton.

He died on Sunday after suffering from a long illness.

Born in the Chicago projects, Callier was a childhood friend of Curtis Mayfield and Jerry Butler, and began singing in doo-wop groups in his teens. Later he became a fixture on the city's coffee house scene, releasing a debut album titled The New Folk Sound of Terry Callier in 1968. In the early 70s he released three critically celebrated "jazz-folk" albums and toured with George Benson and Gil Scott-Heron, but he had abandoned music for a job as a computer programmer at the University of Chicago until a new generation rediscovered his work in the early 90s. - [The Guardian]

Terry Callier Found Dead After Long Illness, The jazz, folk and soul singer Terry Callier has died aged 67.

He was reportedly found dead at his home yesterday, having suffered a long-term illness.

A prodigious musician from the age of three, Callier’s career began after he set up residency at a coffeehouse in his native Chicago, having performed with a number of doo-wop groups in his early teens. His sets at the Fickle Pickle brought him to the attention of Chess Records arranger Charles Stepney, who produced Callier’s first single ‘Look At Me Now’ in 1962.
His first album, The New Folk Sound Of Terry Callier, was released in 1968, and in 1973 his partnership with Stepney brought about the albums Occasional Rain and What Color Is Love?, which distilled Callier’s signature sound, meshing folk and jazz.

While the singer broke into the mainstream with ‘Sign Of The Times’ in 1979, he was dropped by his then-label Elektra, and largely retired from music in the early 80s.

However, a phone call from Eddie Pillar, head of the Acid Jazz label, in 1991, resulting in the re-release of his 1983 single ‘I Don’t Want To See Myself (Without You)’, sparked a return to music that yielded some of Callier’s best work. He contributed vocals to Beth Orton’s 1997 EP ‘Best Bit’, before releasing TimePeace in 1998, which earned Callier the United Nations' Time For Peace award. He collaborated with Orton again on her Central Reservation album from 1999, before releasing Speak Your Peace in 2002, Lookin’ Out in 2005 and Hidden Conservations, produced and co-written by Massive Attack, in 2009.

Sofia Vergara emmy malfunction, While ABC’s Modern Family sweeped the Emmy Awards Sunday night, Sofia Vergara’s rear may have gotten the most press the next morning.

The Colombian beauty tweeted on Sunday that just 20 minutes before the whole cast went on stage to accept the award for Outstanding Comedy Series, that her form-fitting Zuhair Murad teal gown had split. On Wednesday’s episode of Katie the actress discussed the mishap and was shown a video of herself dancing on the red carpet with Ryan Seacrest hours before the incident.

She told Katie Couric, “They’re very delicate those dresses. I guess now that you show me this Ryan Seacrest thing now I know where it came from – where it started ripping – it must have been there.”

“You’re not supposed to be doing those dance moves,” says Vergara.

What did her Modern Family co-stars think of the wardrobe malfunction?

The star realized her dress ripped when she got up to go take a picture with fellow cast member and Emmy Award winner for Outstanding Supporting Actress, Julie Bowen. Apparently her fiancé Nick Loeb and friend ran behind her to tell her.

“I had thought it was something small,” she said. “I never thought it would open the whole thing.”

When she saw her on-screen husband, Ed O’Neill, she said, “he was like, ‘Oh my god, this is bad.’”

Chelsea loses to Shakhtar,  Chelsea have vowed to persist with the dashing football that has taken them four points clear in the Premier League, ahead of Tuesday's Champions League trip to in-form Shakhtar Donetsk. In a far cry from last season's backs-to-the-wall success in the Champions League, Chelsea owe their early-season momentum to expansive, attacking football illuminated by individual flourishes.

The London club's new face was in evidence again at White Hart Lane on Saturday, when they stormed back from 2-1 down against Tottenham Hotspur to win 4-2 and thereby galvanise their grip on first place.
It was Chelsea's first win at Spurs in the league since August 2005 and man-of-the-match Juan Mata said such performances only made the squad more determined to pursue the philosophy that has taken root under Roberto Di Matteo.
"If you win and you can play as we played at Tottenham, that is the best way to play," said the Spaniard, who scored twice and made a goal for Daniel Sturridge.
"We are playing well and we are all enjoying this moment. What we need to do is keep training hard and now we play Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine and we want to stay at the top of our group in the Champions League."
Chelsea's 4-0 win at Danish debutants FC Nordsjaelland in their last outing put them top of Group E, but they lead Shakhtar by goal difference alone and cannot compete with the Ukrainian champions when it comes to recent form.

A Brazilian bricklayer reportedly killed in a car crashshocked his mourning family by showing up alive at his funeral. Relatives of Ademir Jorge Goncalves, 59, had identified him as the victim of a Sunday nightcar crash in Parana state in southern Brazil, police said.
As is customary in Brazil, the funeral was held the following day, which happened to be the holiday of Finados, when Brazilians visit cemeteries to honor the dead.

What family members didn’t know was that Goncalves had spent the night at a truck stop talking with friends over drinks of a sugarcane liquor known as cachaca, his niece Rosa Sampaio told the O Globo newspaper. He did not get word about his own funeral until it was already happening Monday morning.
A police spokesman in the town of Santo Antonio da Platina said Goncalves rushed to the funeral to let family members know he was not dead.
“The corpse was badly disfigured, but dressed in similar clothing,” said the police spokesman, who talked on condition of anonymity as he wasn’t authorized to discuss the case. “People are afraid to look for very long when they identify bodies, and I think that is what happened in this case.”
Sampaio told O Globo that some family members were not sure the body was Goncalves.
“My two uncles and I had doubts about the identification,” she told O Globo. “But an aunt and four of his friends identified the body, so what were we to do? We went ahead with the funeral.”
The police spokesman confirmed there were doubts: “His mom looked at the body in the casket and thought something was strange. She looked and looked and couldn’t believe it was her son,” Sampaio said. “Before long, the walking dead appeared at the funeral. It was a relief.”
The body was correctly identified later Monday, the police spokesman said, and has already been buried in another state. He declined to release the actual victim’s name.

Casino Heist Suspect

by umer | 10:38 AM in |

Casino Heist Suspect, Police arrested a 29-year-old Las Vegas man in an armed robbery of $1.5 million in casino chips from the posh Bellagio resort on the Las Vegas Strip.

Anthony M. Carleo was being held at the Clark County jail pending a Friday court appearance on felony armed robbery and burglary charges. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance Monday.

Las Vegas police say Carleo was the motorcycle-helmeted robber who waved a gun, grabbed high-value casino chips and made off on a motorcycle before dawn Dec. 14. No shots were fired and no one was hurt. Police said then that they thought the same man robbed the Suncoast casino in northwest Las Vegas early Dec. 8.

But stealing $1.5 million in chips isn't like stealing $1.5 million, experts and police pointed out at the time. Chips are unique to casino properties and are generally not interchangeable, although state regulations let casino companies redeem sister properties' chips with some restrictions.

After the heist, Bellagio announced plans to discontinue the casino's $25,000 chips in April, setting a deadline for the thief to try to use them. Police weren't saying early Thursday whether the suspect tried to redeem the chips which ranged from $100 to $25,000 before he was arrested.

Kris Jenner Wardrobe Malfunction

by umer | 10:17 AM in |

Kris Jenner Wardrobe Malfunction,Kris Jenner one-upped Kim Kardashian this weekend -- by making her Wonder Womancostume even more revealing than the one her daughter wore in 2008!
The "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" matriarch tweeted a photo of her in a potential Halloween costume this weekend, where her new boobs had a double nip slip.

It's unclear whether the photo was accidentally tweeted out or if she simply didn't notice the slip, but Khloe quickly pointed it out ... tweeting "Hi nips. That's my mom."

Though Kris quickly pulled the photo down, it's still up on Khloe's Instagram feed. On Monday, the 56-year-old posted a censored version of the pic on her blog writing, "Jeeeez what’s all the fuss about?!!! It’s just an innocent nip slip, happens to the best of us."

Of course, Kris isn't the first member of the Kardashian clan to dress as the DC Comics heroine.

Kim wore a similar version of the costume to her Halloween bash back in 2008, opting for no cape, black tights and skimpier bottoms.

Nip slip aside, who pulled it off better? Sound off below.

And be sure to check out more of Kim's costumes through the years in the gallery above.

Chevy Chase rant

by umer | 10:47 AM in |

Chevy Chase rant, Chevy Chase is on the frying pan for blowing off steam on the set of the NBC show “Community” Friday. Chase was reportedly angry at the direction his bigoted character, Pierce Hawthorne, was taking and angrily ranted that the next thing he would be asked to do is call Donald Glover’s character Troy or Yvette Nicole Brown’s character Shirley the “N-word.”

The 69-year-old actor has now apologized for using the word, clarifying that his frustrations were not directed at any of his cast members. Not that we think that needed clarifying, but evidently Chase did.
It’s a little ironic actually because Chase played a bigot based on the Mel Gibson incident in the ripped from the headlines Law & Order episode “In Vino Veritas” (2006). In that episode, it was okay for his character, Mitch Carroll, to say “Jew bitch” and to call Milena Govich’s character, Nina Cassady, “sugar tits” on TV, nevermind in a rant with a director.

Russell Means dies

by umer | 10:46 AM in |

Russell Means never shunned attention. Whether leading Native Americans in railing against broken federal treaties, appearing in a Hollywood blockbuster or advocating a sovereign American Indian nation within U.S. borders, the activist who helped lead the 1973 uprising at Wounded Knee reveled in the spotlight.

But it was only on his terms. Openly critical of mainstream media, the onetime leader of the American Indian Movement often refused interviews and verbally blasted journalists who showed up to cover his public appearances. Instead, he chose to speak to his fan base through YouTube videos and blog posts on his personal website.

When he did speak out publicly, he remained steadfast in his defense of AIM. He found himself dogged for decades by questions about the group's alleged involvement in the slaying of a tribe member and the several gun battles with federal officers during the 71-day occupation of Wounded Knee, but denied the group ever promoted violence.

"You people who want to continue to put AIM in this certain pocket of illegality, I can't stand you people," Means said, lashing out an at audience member question during an April gathering commemorating the uprising's 40th anniversary. "I wish I was a little bit healthier and a little bit younger, because I wouldn't just talk."

Means, who announced in August 2011 that he had developed inoperable throat cancer but told The Associated Press he was forgoing mainstream medical treatments in favor of traditional American Indian remedies, died early Monday at his ranch in in Porcupine, S.D., Oglala Sioux Tribe spokeswoman Donna Salomon said. He was 72.

Chris Brown Loses Wrigley and Got Milk Ad Deals Rihanna Assault, Chris Brown Loses Wrigley and Got Milk Ad Deals Rihanna Assault – As the news broke today that Lance Armstrong is being stripped of his Tour de France titles because of doping, the domino effect of his actions are best illustrated by him losing endorsement deals.

Las week the cyclist lost his endorsements from Nike, Trek, Giro, Radio Shack, and Anheuser Busch. He was also forced to step down as chairman of Livestrong, the non-profit organization he founded to help cancer patients.
Chris Brown Loses Wrigley and Got Milk Ad Deals Rihanna Assault

It is reminiscent of other incidents of celebrities behaving badly. Chris Brown, of course, may be one of the most obvious examples of how a celebrity’s actions don’t go unforgiven– especially when it’s as disgusting as domestic abuse.

After the story broke that Brown had hit pop-singer and ex-girlfriend Rihanna, he was quickly dumped by two companies with which he had endorsement deals: Wrigley’s Double Mint Gum and the Got Milk group.

After all, who wants to have the face of a violent person at the helm of a marketing campaign? Brown was dropped almost immediately from both after the Rihanna story was revealed back in 2009.

It is unlikely that Brown will ever be able to garner the same level of respect he once did and it would be shocking to hear if he gets any endorsements in the near future. Same goes for Lance– nobody wants a doper to represent their company.

Charlize Theron sued by raymond weil for wearing christian dior watch,A Swiss watchmaker is suing the Hollywood actress Charlize Theron for allegedly breaking an endorsement deal to wear only its timepieces.

According to court papers filed in Manhattan by the Raymond Weil company, the South African star has also been photographed wearing watches made by Christian Dior, which has been paying her to promote its perfumes.

Weil claims that Theron, who won a best actress Oscar for Monster in 2003, was paid "substantial funds" so the company could use photographs of her in its advertisements.

A photograph of Theron, 31, wearing a Dior watch at a film festival news conference in Texas was included as an exhibit.

The watchmaker also complained that an advertisement for an Aids charity, in which Theron was wearing a non-Raymond Weil necklace, also breached the terms of the deal, which ran for 11 months last year.

David Jaroslawicz, the company's lawyer, said: "She has two hands and felt she could take money from two places at the same time."

Although the lawsuit, which alleges fraud and breach of contract, doesn't specify the level of damages being sought, Weil said it had spent more than £10 million on the Theron advertising campaign.

Rihanna fired by Nivea for being too sexy,Nivea has a new boss - and he doesn't like Rihanna. The singer was featured in ads for the company last year and was also sponsored by the brand on her tour, but it looks like their working relationship is now over. Stefan Heidenreich, the new CEO of Nivea's parent company, Beiersdorf - thinks Rihanna and Nivea have different sets of values. Namely, Rihanna is sexy and controversial, while Nivea is a wholesome and family-focused brand. In a statement to a German newspaper Heidenreich remarked, "The advert starring Rihanna was a no-go. I do not understand how to bring the core brand of Nivea in conjunction with Rihanna. Nivea is a company which stands for trust, family and reliability."

Kate Moss and Rihanna pose together in Vogue,KATE MOSS’s Christmas has come early.

The model has posed for her first snaps with RIHANNA after tapping up the Bajan to appear in a shoot with her.

Celebrity photographer MARIO TESTINO was the bloke behind the lens.

He shot them at a secret location in London this week and the pics will feature in a future edition of Vogue.

A source said: “Kate has wanted this for a long time and pulled all the strings to make it happen.

“She’s a big fan of Rihanna and loves her attitude.

“Plus, she’s got one of her favourite snappers on board. It’s the ideal scenario.”

Kate and Rihanna became pals earlier this year and have kept in touch ever since.

They were pictured together at STELLA McCARTNEY’s London Fashion Week party in February but it was a tear-up at another fashion event which really cemented their bond.

The pair ended up in Rihanna’s hotel suite with N-DUBZ star FAZER after Kate earlier watched the rapper make his catwalk debut in the same London hotel.

That mini-bar bill would have been six figures.

Kate Moss loses H&M Chanel Burerry endorsements after cocaine. Kate Moss [NUDE PICS] is still one of the highest-earning women in fashion, but her campaign took a major hit in 2005 when the Daily Mirror published photos of the then 31-year-old snorting what appeared to be cocaine.

Lance Armstrong doping lost endorsements nike anheuser-busch, For years, Lance Armstrong carried a growing burden of doping accusations up increasingly steep hills, accumulating fans, wealth and respect along the way.

On Wednesday, he crashed.
In one day, the renowned cyclist and cancer survivor lost a major endorsement deal with Nike -- once worth millions of dollars -- and the chairmanship of the cancer charity he founded 15 years ago.
While stepping down as chairman of Livestrong was Armstrong's idea, losing Nike's support wasn't.
Opinion: 'U.S. Postal doping predates Armstrong'
Nike, which initially stood by Armstrong, dropped him Wednesday with a terse statement citing what it called "seemingly insurmountable evidence" that he participated in doping.
Hours later, brewery giant Anheuser-Busch followed suit, saying it will let Armstrong's contract expire at the end of the year. Nike and Anheuser-Busch said they still plan to support Livestrong and its initiatives.
The American Cancer Society, which has had a long relationship with Armstrong, said only that it would continue to collaborate with Livestrong.
Armstrong walked away as chairman of the Livestrong cancer charity "to spare the foundation any negative effects as a result of controversy surrounding my cycling career," according to a statement posted to the group's website.
He will remain on the charity's board of directors, but he will turn over the reins to founding chairman Jeff Garvey.

Gerard Butler Is in Rehab

by umer | 9:36 AM in |

Gerard Butler Is in Rehab, Gerard Butler was last seen in public at the end of last month, and TMZ has the explanation for his prolonged absence: the actor has been in rehab, after developing an addiction to painkillers after shooting “300.”
Usually, the actor is very private and doesn't like to talk about his personal life all that much, which could explain why he never mentioned such a thing in his many interviews since the film came out.

However, fans must know that Butler did have some issues, with alcohol in particular, which he said he gave up in his 20s because it was causing him too many problems.

Now, TMZ says that he got into trouble again.

The good news, though, is that Gerry has already completed his treatment at the Betty Ford clinic and will come out today.

“Butler’s problems were triggered by the physical demands of shooting '300' in 2006. We’re told the actor began struggling with pain management, and the problem became exacerbated while filming 'Of Men and Mavericks,' when Butler was badly hurt on December 18 during a surfing accident,” TMZ reports.

Chicago Bullet Tax Plan To Curb Gun Crime, A leading Chicago official is proposing to tax the sale of bullets and firearms in an effort to curb the city's high gun crime and murder rate.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle is submitting her proposal calling for a levy of five cents for each bullet and \$25 for each firearm sold in Chicago and its surrounding area.

The tax could generate about \$1m a year which could be diverted towards medical care for gunshot victims.

Law enforcement officials would be exempt.

Chicago has reported 409 homicides this year compared to 324 during the same period in 2011. That is actually an improvement on the 900 killings a year Chicago averaged in the 1990s.

"We think that's an appropriate thing to do, especially in the light of the gun violence we struggle to deal with in our criminal justice system and our public health system," Toni Preckwinkle told local journalists.

"The legal gun shops in suburban Cook County are a conduit for crimes in Chicago. There's no way around it."

Woman Living Biblically One Year

Woman Living Biblically One Year: Woman Lives Out Bible Literally for Year, Writes Book, Gets Scorned for Use of Word ‘Vagina’: An Evangelical blogger’s attempt to “live Biblically” has caused some controversy in Evangelical circles.

Rachel Held Evans was raised Evangelical Christian. She often speaks at Christian universities and her father is a professor at a faith-based college inTennessee. Evans’ Biblical background got her thinking about the Bible’s rules for women, so she set out to abide by them for a year — literally.

Evans embarked on a 12-month experiment and wrote about it on her blog. Her husband, Dan (and college sweetheart), fully supported her project until some of her stunts “freaked him out.”

He was a bit taken back when Evans praised him with a sign outside the city gates as instructed in the Old Testament (Proverbs 31:23).

When Evans complained, nagged or gossiped, she put a penny in a jar of contention. Within the first couple of days Evans said she already had 26 pennies.

Pagan Rock Carving

by umer | 8:56 AM in |

Pagan Rock Carving,  An 8,000-year-old rock engraving depicting the Sun as a divinity has been destroyed in the south of Morocco, local residents said, blaming Salafists seeking to impose their fundamentalist view of Islam.

Ahmed Assid, a prominent activist for the indigenous Amazigh people and member of the Royal Institute for Amazigh Culture (IRCAM), said the pagan rock engraving, known as a petroglyph -- was destroyed this week in the Toubkal National Park.

"The information we have received from Amazigh activists in the area suggests Salafists were behind the act," Assid told Reuters, noting however that he had yet to see pictures of the destroyed petroglyph.

"This act follows a noticeable rise in Salafist activities in predominantly-Amazigh regions of Moroccoto enforce a puritanical interpretation of Islam," he added.

He said, for example, Salafists were encouraging parents not to play traditional Amazigh music at their children's weddings, giving them cash handouts to opt instead for Islamic religious chants.

"Their view is that aspects of Amazigh culture, including pre-Islamic heritage, still present today defeat the purpose of the Islamic conquests," he added.

Ghost Display At Zoo Racist

by umer | 8:54 AM in |

The St. Louis Zoo says it's a Halloween display of ghosts hanging from trees, but some call it offensive. A viewer wrote to News 4 saying the exhibit looks more like lynchings. News 4 went to the St. Louis Zoo on Tuesday to get an explanation and now zoo leaders are making changes. It wasn't the first time the zoo had heard concerns over the perception of the zoo's decorations. But after News 4 contacted the zoo, they agreed to make changes to the display. "It was like a complete outrage to me, it was very hurtful," said Chris Burchett, a zoo patron. "The picture appeared to be black people hanging from a rope." Burchett saw the photo on the St. Louis Zoo Facebook page. Burchett took his concerns to zoo officials. The display consists of 10 or so ghostly characters with black faces swaying in the breeze. Burchett says it's no less offensive in person and someone should have realized it before the display went up. "That's a no brainer," he said. "It's impossible that you could not see that that's racist you know, there's no way." Zoo officials say an outside vendor who made and installed the zoo's Halloween decorations created these to look like faceless ghosts, with a light in the head and at night that's all that shows up. But during the day the ghost has a black face and is hanging by a rope and that's giving some the wrong impression. Zoo officials say the comments haven't all been negative, but they certainly don't want to offend anyone. "We've looked at what we've seen in terms of photographs, we've discussed and we've made the decision that we'll take them down," said Wyndel Hill, Vice President of Internal Relations. Burchett says he's glad the zoo understood his perspective. "I definitely do appreciate them taking it down because it is very offensive to a lot of different people especially the African-American community." Zoo officials say the creative team that made and installed the black face ghosts included African-American workers, but will be replacing the decorations soon to make sure no one is offended when they come to the zoo.

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher

by umer | 8:43 AM in |

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher are a couple no more, two months after Ashton's sixth-anniversary gift to Demi of a scandal around his alleged infidelity with a San Diego party receptionist while she was off working in New York City. Her belated gift to him was, of course, her decision Thursday to get a divorce.

After his-and-hers statements Thursday, speculation -- some of it humorous -- has filled the information vacuum. Prepare yourself for some gossipy gossip, which we hope you'll keep in the proper perspective.

Who gets Bruce Willis? What will @mrskutcher's new Twitter handle be? Will this drama, like the life of Charlie Sheen, be incorporated into Ashton's "Two and a Half Men" character's story line? (Whoops, too late on that last one, as Kutcher's Walden Schmidt has already been suffering the pain of a divorce from a wife who told him he was emotionally immature.)

Then there's the open-marriage buzz. "Everyone in Hollywood knows about their arrangement," an unnamed "insider" told the Star tabloid, "but they've managed to keep it a secret from the general public."

Chelsea Handler, who said she doesn't know them "personally very well," opined to a shocked, simply shocked Piers Morgan on his CNN show that "I think they probably had a lot of good times with some other women... Clearly they had a lot of threesomes, that led to twosomes without Demi and that leads to a divorce." After watching tape of the couple on a previous "Piers Morgan Tonight," she added, "I absolutely feel for her."

Saturday Night Live Usain Bolt

by umer | 7:48 AM in |

Saturday Night Live Usain Bolt, “Saturday Night Live” parodied the vice presidential debate with a little help from the world’s fastest man. Jamaicansprinter Usain Bolt dropped by the NBC sketch show’s mock debate after Taran Killam, playing Mitt Romney’s running mate, Paul Ryan, claimed he won the 100-meter race at the London Olympics.

Ryan has been criticized for exaggerating his marathon time.

“SNL” had fun with the vice president candidates following Thursday’s contentious debate. While President Barack Obama and Romney’s first debate didn’t offer as much obvious satire, the show happily skewered Vice President Joe Biden and Ryan.

Jason Sudeikis, as Biden, called himself “Big Daddy Joe” and insisted he was “monkey strong” unlike his younger foe, whom he referred to as “shark eyes.” Killam played Ryan with an Eddie Munster-like widow’s peak.

Jerry Kill released from hospital

by umer | 7:47 AM in |

Minnesota coach Jerry Kill has been released from the hospital one day after he had a seizure in the locker room after a loss to Northwestern.
University physician Dr. Pat Smith issued a statement on Sunday saying Kill has been treated and is "in
excellent health." Kill has struggled with seizures for years, including several times last season in his first year with Minnesota.
School officials did not provide a status for next weekend's game at Wisconsin. But Kill has never missed a game because of seizures and Smith says the coach plans to be back in the office on Monday.
Smith says Kill's "only concern is his team and staff, and he is excited to resume his normal coaching duties as Minnesota prepares for Wisconsin this week."

Bobbi Kristina Nick Gordon heart attack victimReportedly, Bobbi Kristina Brown And Nick Gordon were at an ATM machine on Saturday when someone flagged them down for help with a family member who appeared to be having a heart attack. According to RadarOnline:
“The pair raced to the car, and Nick pulled the gravely ill man out of the vehicle, placing him on the ground.

Bobbi Kristina elevated his legs in a move to help blood flow to his brain.
The young couple, clearly distressed, stayed with the man and his family until paramedics arrived.”It’s great to hear something positive about these two for a change. If they keep up with these antics, I may forget just how creepy their relationship is…or maybe not. These two make me gag about as much as actor Doug Hutchisonand his child bride Courtney Stodden.

Taylor Momsen Spoken Word Video

by umer | 7:42 AM in |

Taylor Momsen Spoken Word Video, I just miss Taylor Momsen as JennyHumphrey on Gossip Girl. No longer even spoken about in the show, Momsen left quite a while back to pursue a career in music in her band called The Pretty Reckless. Since then, she’s become very dark, always with loads of black makeup around her eyes to accent the permanent miserable look on her face.

In a new black & white video for one of their songs called “Under The Water,” Momsen speaks out the lyrics while the frame is a major closeup on her face and body. By the end of the video, she stands naked in front of the camera. As someone wrote in the comments on YouTube, “Girl? eat a sandwich!” She looks very thin in the video.

I dunno how I feel about Taylor Momsen. There’s something about privileged and entitled people who walk around with miserable looks on their faces that just irks me. Apparently the song is actually good, although I haven’t heard it. I still secretly hope she comes back at least for one episode in this last season of GG. Anyway, check out the video below where she speaks the lyrics of the song and bares all.

A Cleveland, Ohio, bus driver dealt quite the blow to a woman who apparently had been taunting him during a ride, delivering an uppercut punch directly to her jaw.

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) is currently investigating the fight between a male bus driver and a female passenger after a video of the driver throwing an uppercut and tossing the woman off his bus, Fox 8 Cleveland reports.

The video, recorded by a fellow passenger, was posted on WorldStarHipHop.com and YouTube and began going viral on Reddit before it gained national attention.

It is unclear what the two first began fighting over, but the female can be heard threatening to fight the driver. The driver then says he will get his daughter and granddaughter to come down and deal with the 25-year-old woman, who then tells him to bring along his "mammy," the International Business Times notes.

james holmes new charges

by umer | 9:10 AM in |

james holmes new charges, James Holmes is facing 10 new charges for the Colorado movie theater shooting that left 12 people dead and 58 wounded. It is unclear what the new charges include. Holmes was facing 142 counts, including 24 counts of first-degree murder, and now he is facing 152 charges total. The charges were added during a hearing Thursday, where Holmes attended with cropped dark hair and a stubbly beard. Prosecutors also announced at the hearing that they would not fight for the admissibility of the notebook Holmes allegedly sent to his psychiatrist, Dr. Lynn Fenton, hours before the shooting. Holmes’ public defender, Tamara Brady, has argued that the notebook should not be used at trial, because it is confidential communication between a patient and doctor. Prosecutors say they maintain the belief that the notebook is not confidential, but will drop the issue out of fear it will delay the trial. The defense also requested Thursday that prosecutors be sanctioned for saying in a previous hearing that Holmes was banned from the University of Colorado campus for making threats. The defense says there is no evidence that Holmes was banned after making threats. The judge has not yet ruled on that point.

Murder victim found entombed in concrete was former Fla. journalist, Authorities on Friday identified the body of a man who was found entombed in concrete in the backyard of a northeast Georgia home.

The man has been identified as Sean Dugas, 30, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation medical examiner's office. The body was found Monday encased in a plastic storage container filled with concrete.

Authorities this week charged twin brothers Christopher and William Cormier, 31, with murder in the death of Dugas, a former newspaper reporter in Pensacola, Fla. The Cormier brothers are also charged with concealing death.

"It's a little hard to wrap your head around it," said Kris Wernowsky, who worked at the Pensacola News Journal, where he sat next to Dugas for about three years. "I've worked there for so many years and covered many things in Florida. You never would have thought you would go to a website and click on a story about someone you know. ... It's heartbreaking."

Dreadlocks, long beard
Dugas' dreadlocks and bushy long beard helped him stand out easily in the Pensacola area on the Florida Panhandle, Wernowsky said. Dugas had covered a wide variety of topics, including breaking news and entertainment, the newspaper said on its website.

Don't brush teeth after drinking pop, You think you're doing something healthy by brushing your teeth right after slurping a soda, but you're doing more harm than good. The combination of the acid in the soda and the abrasive action of brushing can actually erode your tooth enamel, which can lead to cavities. So instead of reaching for your toothbrush after drinkingacidic drinks such as soda, citrus juices like lemonade, or sport drinks, reach for some water to sip on instead. It'll help rinse the acid from your teeth. Or chew gum since it encourages the production of saliva, which neutralizes the acid in your mouth. Then afterward, feel free to brush.

B12 and canker sores

by umer | 12:51 AM in |

B12 and canker sores, Painful canker sores are often blamed on sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) by marketers of natural or organic toothpastes; in reality, vitamin B12 deficiencies are an identified cause of a painful tongue canker, canker sore, oral ulcer or other throbbing mouth sores.

Understanding Canker Sores

Canker sores are actually open sores located on the gums, tongue and other oral mucous membranes. Canker sores are painful, last about two to four weeks and oftentimes force the sufferer to alter his food intake to prevent additional pain.

A study of the Better Health Channel proves that canker sores are predominantly caused by actual injury to the oral mucous membranes, followed by a host of other conditions. It is noteworthy that dietary deficiencies - most commonly a lack of vitamins C, B12, zinc and also iron - may also cause the formation of painful canker sores.

The Vitamin B12 Canker Sores Connection

The vitamin B12 canker sores connection was first documented in 1978. In a study published in theJournal of Oral Pathology, researchers determined that a high percentage of canker sores sufferers also experienced nutritional deficits. Most notable were a lack of vitamin B-12 and iron as well as folic acid. These deficiencies soon became noted candidates for contributing to the formation of canker sores.

U.S. consumer sentiment jumps ahead of elections, U.S. consumer sentiment unexpectedly rose to its highest in five years in October in the latest in a string of encouraging signs from the economy that may boost President Barack Obama's re-election hopes next month.

The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's preliminary October reading on the overall index on consumer sentiment came in at 83.1, up from 78.3 the month before, and the highest since September 2007, the survey showed on Friday.

The new buoyancy among consumers comes shortly after the U.S. unemployment rate tumbled to its lowest in nearly four years in September as more people returned to the workforce and found jobs than economists had predicted.

"We are getting some quite interesting signals from consumer sentiment and employment data - both (the) unemployment rate and initial claims - that there has been some quite significant improvement in the economy," said David Sloan, an economist at 4Cast in New York.

Economic issues have been a battleground in the election campaign as Obama seeks to burnish his credentials as a competent manager of the economy while Republican challenger Mitt Romney has faulted Obama's record on job creation and growth. Friday's sentiment report was the last before the November 6 general election and will be welcomed by Democrats.

"That kind of boost in consumer sentiment benefits an incumbent without question," said Julia Clark, a pollster with Ipsos in Washington. "The challenge that the Republicans have is continuing to attack the government's credibility on this issue while we actually are seeing data that suggest that consumer sentiment is improving."

Sam Gibbons dies

Sam Gibbons diesOver the years, Sam Gibbons was treasurer of several organizations. He was good with numbers and thrifty.
But maybe he was too thrifty. In the end, he allotted us only 95 years.

“Mr. Sam” died quietly alone in his home Monday, March 22, 2010.

His son, Howard Gibbons, said Tuesday that was the way Sam would have wanted it. No fuss.

The younger Gibbons said his father, whom he always called “Sam,” had cared for his mother, Fern, for 15
years at home after she lost her sight to macular degeneration. In recent years after Fern moved to Limestone Health Facility, Sam came faithfully every day to help her with lunch.

The former marketing manager of ConAgra Poultry and 36-year manager of the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration in Shelbyville, Tenn., Sam attained notable achievements in his professional life.

But it is for his volunteerism and devotion to this community, in which he had lived for the past 50 years, that he will be most remembered.

Obama as Costanza, Looking to recover from his disastrous Wednesday debate performance,President Obama appears to be stealing a page from George Costanza’spublic relations playbook.Obama may have sleepwalked through last night’s debate, failing to answerany of Mitt Romney best attack lines, but at a rally in Denver today he was ready with some tart responses of his own. On Romney’s line about PBS and Big Bird, Obama shot back today, “Thank goodness somebody is finally getting tough on Big
Bird.” And on Romney’s line about Obama needing a new accountant, Obama said , “We know for sure it was not the real Mitt Romney because he seems to be doing just fine with his current accountant.”
This caused caused NBC NEws’ Chuck Todd to tweet: “Watching POTUS here in Denver, reminds me of when I lose an argument and come up w/better responses the next day.”
To which Pat Hynes responded: “Yeah, well the jerk store called.” – a reference to a 1997 episode of Seinfeld (clipped above) where Jason Alexander’s character, George Costanza, can’t think of a good comeback to a co-worker’s joke about his eating, “Hey George, the ocean called, they’re running out of shrimp.” Costanza then spends the rest of the episode plotting how to deliver his retort, “Well, the Jerk Store called, and they’re running out of you.”

Ingrid Bergman Petter Lindström, Dr. Petter Lindstrom, a Swedish-born neurosurgeon respected in his field for his pioneering work in so-called bloodless brain surgery, died on May 24 at his home in Sonoma, Calif. He was 93.

Dr. Lindstrom had the misfortune of being better known to the rest of the world as the husband Ingrid Bergman deserted for Roberto Rossellini, who directed her in the movie ''Stromboli.'' The Lindstrom-Bergman marriage lasted 13 years and ended in scandal and a bitterly contested divorce in 1950.

Dr. Lindstrom went on to a long, distinguished career as a teacher and a practitioner who contributed to the technical advances in brain surgery.

Ingrid Bergman wed Mr. Rossellini, but the marriage was annulled in 1960. She later married Lars Schmidt, a Swedish businessman and theatrical producer. She died in 1982.

Dr. Lindstrom's forte was surgery of the deep brain using ultrasound, carried out to leave no lesions or permanent changes in brain function. He performed the procedure on patients with intractable pain; psychoneuroses like obsessive-compulsive disorders, anxiety and depression; and certain types of epilepsy.

Petter Lindstrom was born in Stode, Sweden. He studied dentistry in Heidelberg, Stockholm and Leipzig, where he received a doctorate in dental surgery in 1931. He went into private practice in Stockholm and held an associate professorship at the Karolinska Institute there.
