Asteroid 195 billion, The space rock set to give Earth a historically close shave this Friday (Feb. 15) may be worth nearly $200 billion, prospective asteroid miners say.

The 150-foot-wide (45 meters) asteroid 2012 DA14 — which will zoom within 17,200 miles (27,000 kilometers) of Earth on Friday, marking the closest approach by such a large space rock that astronomers have ever known about in advance — may harbor $65 billion of recoverable water and $130 billion in metals, say officials with celestial mining firm Deep Space Industries.

That's just a guess, they stressed, since 2012 DA14's composition is not well known and its size is an estimate based on the asteroid's brightness. And not everyone thinks the guess is likely to be right.

"Deep Space Industries is being far too optimistic about this particular rock," Michael Bush, of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, told SPACE.com via email.

"Nick Moskovitz at MIT has obtained an IR spectrum of DA14, and it is an L-class object," he added. "That means a stony composition, made of iron-magnesium-silicates, and minimal water and accessible metal content. It also is not obvious how much the value of water and metal in Earth orbit would decrease with an increased supply."

13-year-old birth announcement

by umer | 1:03 AM in |

13-year-old birth announcement, A photo of a 13-years-old birth newborn is making its way by announcement, leaving most people puzzled and confused. That’s because the baby is allegedly a teenager.

“Here’s my sweet not so little newborn!” Kelli Higgins wrote on Facebook. “His name is Latrell and weighs 112 lbs ;)”

To clear up the confusion, Kelli and her husband, Daniel Higgins, adopted Latrell and his younger sister, Chanya, two years ago, even though they already had five biological children and were pregnant with their sixth.

Kelli, who lives in Crestview, Fla., always knew she wanted to adopt children out of the foster care system. When she saw photos of the siblings, she fell in love.

“They were just absolutely beautiful,” Higgins told the New York Daily News. “There they were, standing in front of a camera with forced smiles, taking pictures so that someone would adopt them. My heart just broke for them.”

Donaly Trump Beyonce

by umer | 12:52 AM in |

Donaly Trump Beyonce,Big surprise here: Donald Trump has slammed Beyonce's Super Bowl performance last Sunday because of what he called "suggestive" dancing and inappropriate behavior onstage. Appearing on "The Howard Stern Show" on Feb. 6, the 66-year-old real estate mogul said: "When Beyonce was thrusting her hips forward in a very suggestive manner, if someone else would have done that it would have been a national scandal. I thought it was ridiculous ... I thought it was not appropriate," he said. Beyonce performed at the halftime show to much critical acclaim, despite the unflattering photographs that emerged afterward of the pop star making unusually aggressive poses. And though the outspoken Trump made clear that he found Bey's show distasteful, he recognized he was in the minority when it came to his visceral reaction to the performance. "There's been no mention of [her scandalous behavior]. So obviously, it must not have been so bad. She gets a pass."

Missy Franklin meet

by umer | 6:24 AM in |

Missy Franklin meet, Missy Franklin, the teenage swimming sensation at the London Olympics last summer, will finish her storied high school career before a sold-out venue this weekend in Ft. Collins, Colo.

Since 90% of the tickets to the Class 5A state meet are allocated to schools, there was a huge demand for a small number of tickets to the 900-seat stadium........latimes

Now, you might be thinking what many others have: Why is an Olympic medalist bothering to compete against high school athletes? The senior at Regis Jesuit High in Aurora, Colo., does have four gold medals, two in individual events and two from relays, as well as a bronze on another relay team.

“Just because a swimmer competes in the Olympics doesn't mean that she has left childhood and high school behind,” said Bert Borgmann, the assistant commissioner of the Colorado High School Athletic Assn. “Most look at this unique situation as a positive experience for the competitors. It's hard for some folks to remember that Missy is a 17-year-old who wants to do the same things that her friends do and be part of the team and have fun doing it."

Coach Eric Craven of Cherry Creek High used the LeBron James analogy.

3,500 flights canceled

by umer | 6:22 AM in |

3,500 Flights Canceled, A blizzard that forecasters predicted would dump up to two feet of snow onto the north-east United States prompted five governors to declare states of emergency on Friday.

Airlines cancelled flights, public transit systems were shut down and people were urged to stay indoors in the face of heavy snow and winds of up to 40mph. Forecasters predicted gusts of up to 60mph later in the evening......guardian.co.uk

About 10,000 customers along the east coast were left without power, and about 3,500 flights were cancelled.

Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick announced a ban on most car travel starting at 4pm Friday afternoon, while in Connecticut governor Dannel Malloy closed the state's highways to all but emergency vehicles.

Blizzard warnings were in place from New Jersey to southern Maine, including for New York City and Boston. Commuters were repeatedly warned not to travel on Friday evening or Saturday, with the National Weather Service warning that visibility could be "near zero in white-out conditions".

In New York, the mayor, Michael Bloomberg urged people to stay in doors and read "a good book".

by umer | 6:21 AM in |

Nemo Tracker, Mayor Michael Bloomberg encouraged New Yorkers to leave work early Friday as the northeast braces for a major winter storm that forecasters predict could dump six to 10 inches of snow in New York City overnight.

“Our biggest concern is making sure people get home from their day and that they don’t abandon their cars in the middle of the road,” Bloomberg said during a brief radio interview Friday morning.....blogs.wsj.

“But we don’t think the snow is going to come down hard enough where that should be a problem. And we have an awful lot of tow trucks ready and we’ve coordinated with all the different agencies that have plows and tow trucks to make sure every resource is available if we need it.”

Bloomberg is expected to deliver an update on the city’s storm preparations at the Office of Emergency Management in Brooklyn later in the day.

In 2010, Bloomberg was the target of intense criticism from New Yorkers andelected officials for his administration’s sluggish response to a post-Christmas blizzard that paralyzed the city for days. The mayor apologized and promised to do better in the future.

Katie Holmes blizzard

by umer | 6:20 AM in |

Katie Holmes Blizzard, Katie Holmes‘ Blizzard Nemo experience – if it’s any comfort to those caught in the storm – is not going very smoothly either.

Blizzard Nemo is shaping up to be one of the fiercest snowstorms in a century, and a Katie Holmes fashion presentation was one of its latest victims.......inquisitr.

The 34-year-old actress was forced to cancel a high-level fashion show after the school attended by daughter Suri closed early on Friday. Holmes, ever the dutiful mother, had to rush to Suri’s school to pick her daughter up.

Prior to the arrival of Blizzard Nemo, Holmes was due to show off her new fashion line alongside designer and stylist Jeanne Yang. People reports how the star spent Thursday “kicking off her heels with fashion editors in a New York City hotel suite to present the latest elegant collection.” By the sounds of it, Friday was rather less relaxed.

As a mother of twin girls herself, we’re sure Yang related to Holmes’ plight – as can thousands of other Americans currently in the path of Blizzard Nemo. As I write, the blizzard is walloping the streets of New York.

Holmes and Yang’s new collection was discussed by Yang in a recent interview with People:

“Our customer is somebody who wants to be comfortable. You want to look good, but Katie and I always talk about this, it should never come at the cost of comfort.”

Holmes talked up the collection to the New York Times, telling the newspaper the pair hoped “to make high-quality pieces that are simple enough, you can wear over and over again.”

Blizzard of 1978 35 years ago

Blizzard of 1978 35 years ago, Yes, Los Angeles is experiencing a bit of a cold snap and "weather" and snow is falling at Big Bear as the copkiller manhunt continues, First Blood-style, but I write for you via the magic of the Internet, while based in interior New England, Western Massachusetts to be exact, in the Berkshires to be ven more exact.

The entire region has been pummelled with unbelievable over-reporting of this being the biggest storm in terms of snowfall, in all weather records for the are. This kind of media hype is bound to fall in its face and that's how it's playing out so far.....scpr.org

I'll be posting updates until this is "over" as determined by the Weather Channeland other media.

As of 4:30pm Eastern, a 1/2 hour after Governor Deval Patrick banned all vehiclesfrom all Massachusetts roadways, there were plenty of cars driving around Pittsfield because the directive was absurd for an eare with a mere 1/4" ofsnowfall. Vine video

Since temperatures were set to drop, my son and I brought 3 wheelbarrows of wood into the house. Despite the lack of snow, it was time to get cozy with a fire, we moved all that wood, didn't we?Went out at 9pm ET to sweep off the steps. 2.5" of snowfall, windy. Friends 50 miles to the East report just under 6" of snow.

Man abuse great white shark

by umer | 1:12 AM in |

Man abuse great white shark, FROM the shore, the group of small boats appeared to be doing the right thing - herding a shark that had swum into the long shallow channel back safely out to sea.

But the throng of holidaymakers who watched from the shoreline at Sussex Inlet, on the New South Wales south coast, soon realised the shark had been hooked by a fisherman on one of the boats and was being fought to a standstill, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Minutes later, the shark, a protected baby great white, was hauled on to the nearby boat ramp and bludgeoned to death in front of crying children, despite the pleas of their horrified parents.

"My five-year-old daughter was in tears. It was horrible, with this guy beating the shark to death with a long metal pole," one of the witnesses, who asked not to be named, said yesterday.

"There were dozens of people there and people were pleading with the men to stop it, but they just killed it in front of everyone."

Department of Primary Industries (Fisheries) officers are investigating the slaughter of the juvenile great white shark, which is fully protected in all Australian waters.

Asteroid Cruise ship to miss earth

by umer | 1:09 AM in |

Asteroid Cruise ship to miss earth,Next week, a 45 meter-wide space rock will zoom safely by. But as far as cosmic distances go, it will be a close shave.
Asteroid 2012 DA14 will make close approach on Feb. 15, flying closer than geosynchronous orbit (27,700 kilometers or 17,200 miles or 1/13th the Earth-moon distance). So unless you're a communications satellite, you have nothing to fear. But even if you were a communications satellite, it's unlikely you'd get swatted by the asteroid juggernaut as space is really, really big.

"NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office can accurately predict the asteroid's path with the observations obtained, and it is therefore known that there is no chance that the asteroid might be on a collision course with Earth," asteroid hunters at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., announced on Feb. 1. 2012 DA14 was discovered in February 2012 by the La Sagra Sky Survey in Spain, so its orbital trajectory is very well known.

But the rock will come close enough to Earth's gravitational well so its orbit will be dramatically modified - after its near-Earth encounter, asteroid 2012 DA14′s orbital period around the sun will be shortened from 368 to 317 days.

So, far from this being a worrying event, the 2012 DA14 flyby will be an incredible opportunity for amateur astronomers and scientists alike. Viewers in Europe, Asia and Australia should be able to spot the asteroid flyby using binoculars or low-powered telescopes. Unfortunately, according to SPACE.com, viewers in the US will be out of luck - the asteroid will be too faint to spot by the time the Earth rotates, bringing the 2012 DA14 into view.

Michigan players catfished

by umer | 12:54 AM in |

Michigan players catfished, Michigan players catfished, “Catfishing” became a household word a couple weeks ago when the nation learned of Manti Te’o and his fake/dead girlfriend, but Michigan was well ahead of the curve. In early January, coach Brady Hoke was telling a group of the state’s high school football coaches how the university perpetrated a similar hoax on several of Michigan’s players.
The university hired an outside consultant to speak with the team about social media responsibility, but wanted a real-life situation on which to draw. So he set up some of Michigan’s players. "Before he came in, we gave him 20 Facebook accounts of guys on our team," coach Brady Hoke said earlier this month while speaking with hundreds of the state's high school football coaches. "He had his assistant -- she tried to talk to our guys. 'Hey, what are ya doin'?' Whatever it might be......sports.yahoo.com

"Well, two months later we're in a team meeting and we're on the topic of what you put out there in the cyber universe ... you should have seen 115 guys when that young lady -- she was hot, now; a very, very nice looking young lady -- when she walked into that meeting room, and the guys looking at each other.

"Because some of them didn't use their heads when communicating back and forth with that young lady."
Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon said Friday that some of the responses to the young lady were not “wholly appropriate.”

But what’s even more interesting about this exercise is that Michigan did it before Deadspin released its article claiming Te’o’s girlfriend – Lennay Kekua – to be a fraud. It turned out Kekua, who supposedly died in September, was actually a hoax created by Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, a man who had a crush on Te’o. Tuiasosopo fabricated Kekua’s voice and ultimately killed her off in September.

Inmates save three boys

by umer | 12:53 AM in |

Inmates save three boys, Inmates save three boys, Inmates saved three boys who were tossed into freezing waters in Washington's Salmon Creek after their canoe capsized, a Feb. 1 report reveals. Some inmates from Larch Corrections Center working nearby could hear the screams of boys who were thrown into the water and quickly rushed to the scene.
Nelson Pettis, who was one of the members of the crew working outside, spoke of the incident. “We just thought it was some kids screaming until we seen their two heads bobbing in the water with the canoe upside down,” Pettis said. “They were coming down over flooded Salmon Creek. It was raging pretty fast.”.....examiner

Pettis took off his jacket and went into the water, but said swimming was difficult since breathing in the frigid waters was near impossible. Once he got his bearings he was able to help the three brothers who were frantically trying to get out of the water.

“I just let the current take me down until I could get to a spot where my feet hit ground and I tried to stay put," Pettis added. "They actually came to me right there. Right then, the current swept me from underneath my feet and I grabbed onto the kids and got them to a little island in the middle of the river.”

Kanye West Straitjacket

by umer | 12:51 AM in |

Kanye West Straitjacket, Kanye West Straitjacket, Kanye West’s apparent resolution for 2013? Pep up his live show with even crazier stage garb than he chose in 2012. The rapper has one-upped even his infamous leather kilt and crystal mask from last year’s gigs with a supremely weird getup in Abu Dhabi Thursday night.
Yep, that’s a straitjacket he’s wearing. We’re not quite sure what the headgear is all about, but it certainly looks scary. West donned the outfit for his performance of “Heartless,” removing the hoodlike garment at the end of the song. He gave no explanation for the odd getup......music.yahoo.

However, West may be attempting to make a little point with the straitjacket. At the end of December, the Grammy-winning artist treated an Atlantic City audience to a rant in which he declared that he was not crazy, despite what the media may make him out to be.

At that same show, he announced his plans to boycott this year’s Grammy Awards. West is one of the top nominees at the Grammys, which will take place February 10. He received six nods total, including two of his songs in the Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song categories.

Volkswagen super bowl ad

Volkswagen super bowl ad, Volkswagen debuted its 2013 Super Bowl commercial on Monday.

The game day ad, called "Get Happy," is set in an drab office environment. One sunny employee brightens his co-workers' days with his cheerful disposition and rides in his Volkswagen.

Volkswagen's 2011 Super Bowl ad called "The Force" featuring a young boy pretending to be Darth Vader was an instant hit. The car company's 2012 ad "The Dog Strikes Back" built upon "The Force's" popularity. "Get Happy" seems most closely aligned with the company's ad "Smiles," which debuted in September.

According to USA Today, the company has not disclosed the cost of the ad but "Volkswagen could spend close to $10 million — far more than any other single marketing expense on tap for the German carmaker in 2013."

Asteroid Close Shave

by umer | 12:49 AM in |

Asteroid Close Shave, Asteroid Close Shave: Record-setting asteroid to shave past Earth next month. An asteroid about half the size of a football field will zoom past Earth on Feb. 15, closer than the man-made satellites that power GPS, says NASA.
“This is a record-setting close approach,” Don Yeomans of NASA’s Near Earth Object Program at JPL said in a video released by NASA this week. Yeomans, however, emphasized that the asteroid, designated 2012DA14, won’t hit Earth.
“It will come interestingly close, closer than many man-made satellites,” he said. Reported foxnews...

2012DA14 will thread the gap between low earth orbit, where the International Space Station and many earth observation satellites are located and the higher belt of geosynchronous satellites, which provide weather data and telecommunications.

At its closest point, the asteroid will only be 17,200 miles above our planet’s surface.

“The odds of impact with a satellite are extremely remote,” Yeomans adds. “Almost nothing orbits where DA14 passes the Earth.

Turkey bombing

by umer | 12:47 AM in |

Turkey bombing, A bomb concealed in a vehicle exploded near a police station in southeast Turkey on Monday night, Turkish media reported, killing at least eight people and wounding dozens amid an escalation in fighting between Kurdish rebels and Turkish security forces.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast in Gaziantep, near the Syrian border, where tens of thousands of refugees who have fled the civil war in their country are sheltering in Turkish camps.

Kurdish militants are active in the area, and their fight for autonomy in Turkey's predominantly Kurdish southeast has intensified in recent weeks. The Kurdish rebel group PKK often targets military patrols with roadside bombs and ambushes, and it also has a long record of attacks in civilian areas.

Television footage showed firefighters attempting to douse a fierce blaze that gutted several vehicles. Medics assisted a wounded person on a stretcher, and ambulance sirens wailed as bystanders gathered to survey the wreckage. Some angry men chanted slogans against Kurdish rebels and their jailed leader, Abdullah Ocalan.

NTV television said eight people died and as many as 50 were wounded. Turkey's Anadolu news agency reported the same number of dead, and cited 61 wounded. Reports said explosives in the car, which was parked at a bus stop, were detonated by remote control.

Cats wipe out billions of birds

by umer | 12:36 AM in |

Cats wipe out billions of birds, Your pet cat may not be as cute and cuddly as you might think. According to a new study published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications, domestic cats kill billions of birds, mice and small animals in the U.S. each year.

Biologists estimated that cats are responsible for the deaths of as many as 3.7 billion birds and 20.7 billion smaller animals, including mice, voles and chipmunks, the Agence France-Presse reported. The study also concludes that cats are likely the No. 1 killer of birds and small mammals in the country.

Led by Scott Loss of the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, the study drew from past research on the predatory habits of cats. While previous studies have suggested cats are responsible for billions of small creature deaths, the most recent estimates are significantly higher.

"The magnitude of wildlife mortality caused by cats that we report here far exceeds all prior estimates,” the report stated, according to the International Business Times.

Indeed, an August 2012 University of Georgia study, produced in conjunction with National Geographic, projected that free-range house cats kill about 4 billion wildlife animals per year, 500 million of which are birds. During the study, researchers attached video cameras to 60 cats to monitor how the felines spend their time. They found that one-third of a cat's day is spent killing smaller creatures, Mother Nature Network reports.

Woman loses eye contact lens fungus

by umer | 12:34 AM in |

Woman loses eye contact lens fungus,Jacqueline Stone, 42, spent 17 weeks in hospital after wearing popular disposables for just one day and claims that the pain was excruciating.

She is now taking legal action believing the infection was caused by Focus Dailies All-Day Comfort lenses which she had ordered online.

The lenses were uncomfortable all day and when attempted to remove them the left one became stuck to her eye, Ms Stone said.

Her vision became blurred after the incident last May and she visited her doctor, who provided her with eye drops.

But two days later, the maths teaching assistant was in so much pain that she went to the Accident and Emergency department where she was given more drops.

Her condition continued to deteriorate and a form of blister began to cover over her eye. It eventually burst, in the process “splitting” her eyeball, the mother of two said.

She added: "I was screaming. My 15-year-old son Charlie called an ambulance and I was given morphine, but it didn't touch the pain. I've given birth twice but nothing compares to that. I could feel the bug eating through my eye."

Ms Stone saw specialists at her local Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, Essex, and at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, who prescribed drops.

It was only a month later when she attended Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, that they diagnosed her with a fungal eye infected caused by Fusarium.

Three layers of her eye and 70 nerves had been damaged and after 22 operations she had to have her eyeball removed.

Powerful drugs that she was prescribed during the process also caused severe vomiting which led to internal bleeding

Beyonce sings anthem

Beyonce sings anthem,Beyonce was on a mission today to PROVE she can sing the national anthem like a pro – belting out a LIVE version of "The Star-Spangled Banner” moments ago on TV … without the help of a backing track ... and she KILLED IT.
Beyonce was at the news conference for her upcoming Super Bowl halftime show when she launched into the impromptu performance -- and when she finished the song, she simply said, “Any questions?”

During the conference, Bey was asked about the lip-syncing situation at the Presidential Inauguration last week, and she admitted she used a backing track -- claiming, "I am a perfectionist ... I did not have time to rehearse with the orchestra [at the Inauguration]. It was a live television show and a very important moment for me."

Beyonce added, "Due to the weather, due to the delay, due to no proper sound check, I did not feel comfortable taking the risk … so I decided to sing along with my pre-recorded track, which is very common in the music industry. And I’m very proud of my performance."

A reporter then asked Beyonce if she planned to sing live at the Super Bowl, and she replied vaguely, "I always sing live" ... but she didn't say whether she planned to use a backing track as well.
When asked about a possible Destiny’s Child reunion at this Sunday's halftime show – Beyonce hedged on the answer.

So let this settle it once and for all ... girl can sing.
