The show's website reports that Paltrow and Giffords are cousins, but have not met. Paltrow released a statement on Sunday, saying, "Although I have never had the pleasure of meeting congresswoman Giffords, my thoughts and prayers are with her and her family as well as the other victims of this horrible act of senseless violence."

Giffords is married to an astronaut, Captain Mark Kelly. His brother, astronaut Scott J. Kelly, is currently in space. Paltrow is the daughter of actress Blythe Danner and producer Bruce Paltrow.

Giffords was one of twenty people shot Saturday; six have already passed away.
