Mudd Day

What act would be so heinous that it would soil your family name for more than a century? Aiding a presidential assassin, like Samuel A. Mudd (Dec. 20, 1833 to Jan. 10, 1883) did. He was imprisoned for life for medically treating John Wilkes Booth, President Abraham Lincoln's assassin. Mudd was later pardoned by President Andrew Johnson, but his name has been dragged through the mud ever since his sentencing.
Although calling someone "mud" or "a stupid twaddling fellow" was used before Mudd's grave error in judgment, according to The Phrase Finder, his actions gave the phrase "Your name is mud" a whole new lowly meaning.

Go Caroling Day

Liven up the Tuesday before Christmas with some singing. Caroling seems old-fashioned and made for movies not real life, but why not give it a try? Caroling dates to the founder of the Catholic Church's Franciscan Order, Francis of Assisi. He is credited with starting the tradition of public singing of merry rather than solemn Christmas songs. Caroling was also practiced by the Norse around the winter solstice, according to Patheos.
* Here are 50 Christmas songs that have been popular in the past.
* Not a singer? Send some a caroling canines e-card to your friends.
American Poet Laureate Established
Joseph Auslander was the first Consultant in Poetry, appointed in 1937. His term was indefinite and not one year as it is today. In 1936, Philanthropist Archer M. Huntington provided an endowment for the appointment of an official poet, according to the Library of Congress.
On Dec. 20, 1985, President Ronald Reagan signed the bill empowering the Library of Congress to choose the annual "Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry." The poet laureate reads the poetry at certain national ceremonies and receives a stipend. Philip Levine is the current poet laureate. Previous poet laureates have included Robert Penn Warren, Robert Frost and Gwendolyn Brooks.
Sangria Day
Test your mixing skills by making a wine-based punch. Sangria is no wallflower; it's the belle of the ball. Sangria owes its popularity to its versatility and ability to serve many thirsty guests ready for merry-making. Use red wine, brandy and some fresh citrus fruit or peaches, following a basic recipe to get the proportions right. If you prefer white wine, you'll be concocting a Sangria Blanco, or white sangria.
