Thief Steals Salvation Army Kettle from Disabled Woman

Thief Steals Salvation Army Kettle from Disabled Woman, It's the season of giving and while you may be putting money into the Salvation Army kettle, others choose to steal it.

Two people decided to steal the Salvation Army kettle from a disabled volunteer at Sunnyway Grocery Store in Chambersburg last Tuesday.

Robert Stokes from Greencastle was arrested Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. in Waynesboro. Police are still looking for the second suspect, Kyle Caccio. Caccio and Stokes have been charged with robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery and theft.

The victim would only give us her first name, Darlene. Major Duane Harris says the suspects picked on a woman who couldn't defend herself.

"She is an older person and is in a motorized scooter and that made it more unbelievable," says Major Duane Harris of the Salvation Army.

It was Darlene's first time being a kettle bell ringer. Luckily she wasn't hurt during the robbery, just a bit scared.

"Emotionally she was shaken up and nervous and scared and all the emotions I can imagine after dealing with something like this," says Harris.

As for other bell ringers in the area, they say they won't let a bad action ruin a good deed.

"I'm not fearful at all," says Robert Midgley. "I feel like the situation is being taken care of."

"I'm not worried about it because if someone wants to steal they can go right ahead because they'd be stealing pocket change," says Marie Monn.

The average amount of money in a kettle at Sunnway ranges anywhere from $70 to $150 in a single shift.

"She just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time doing the right thing," says Harris.

Darlene isn't letting the robbery stop her from helping the less fortunate. She's back ringing the bell, but this time at a different location.

Major Harris has been working with the Salvation Army for 20 years and this is the first time he's had a kettle stolen.

If you see Caccio, call police immediately.
