Kanye West twitter rant
Kanye West twitter rant _ First, there was the fake Twitter account for Kanye West's new "DW" fashion line that had people talking. Then it was Kanye's own tweets on new design company DONDA, that started late Thursday night and kept on going...and going. The lengthy series of tweets began with a history of the music mogul's fashion aspirations and training, and then turned into a philosophical rant about saving the world. Or something like that. As with all things Kanye, it wasn't entirely clear if it was true stream of crazy consciousness or stream of publicity stunt.
Stealth Fashion Design
The fashion "trendsetter/victim" kicked off his long Twitter monologue by explaining he's been basically stumbling through on his own with his fashion career. "I did the first fashion show out of my own pocket," he explained, "and used the money I made touring to follow my passion." Amongst his early training was what tweeters would call a "super sekrit!" mission: "I moved to Rome after I left Japan and worked at Fendi for 4 months under cover …" Kanye tweeted. "I was there to give ideas for the men's collection."
The future designer continued his tweets through more stealth fashion training, how his love of design came from his beloved mom's Cosby sweaters and fur coats, how he spaced out in school, and how he is "allowed" to design the occasional "Nikey" shoe. But back to that school thing...
A New "Cuuriculim?"
Wanting to build on Dr. Dre's pioneering headphone business, apparently, Kanye tweeted that he was going to build the ultimate fashion company: "I am assembling a team of architects, graphic designers, directors musicians, producers, AnRs, writers, publicist, social media experts...app guys, managers, car designers, clothing designers, DJs, video game designers, publishers, tech guys, lawyers, bankers, nutritionist ...doctors, scientist,teachers... to help simplify and aesthetically improve everything we see hear, touch, taste and feel."
Amongst those brilliant thinkers? Spike Jonze, with whom the budding world-improver hopes to "do a Summer school that tries new forms of cuuriculim." Really, that requires no further commentary. To be fair, the rapper with lofty goals did confess that his grammar was often lacking: "My mom was an English teacher so I know she sends an SMDH from heaven : )"
Thin Line Between Genius and Madness
West's Twitter rant continued on, dipping from surreal comments on creating a "project called 2016 Olympics" and saving the world by doing the MTV Awards...or at least that's what we think he said. But amidst the mess of wildly careening thoughts were a few nuggets of sense about the need for schools to teach some actual life skills, and to address the needs of kids with a different style of learning--as well as children with difficult living situations. It all ended with a call to action, and a plea for people with ideas to email their own Kanye-esque thoughts to "DONDA@gmail.com". Send in yours, if the email server hasn't completely crashed by now.
Twitter Reacts
Whatever his intent, the rapper/fashion mogul/awards-show-interrupter definitely got a reaction from his extended Twitter rant. While there was some support for all, or at least segments of his monologue, many tweeters took the chance to add their humorous or critical take on the subject:
