Bobby Petrino new job--ESPN’s Brett McMurphy is reporting that Petrino, who was the offensive coordinator for the Cardinals in 1998 before a four year stint as head coach from 2003-2006, is one of the three finalists for the job after interviewing with UL athletic director Tom Jurich Tuesday.

According to the Courier-Journal, there has been support for Petrino in the Louisville area and Petrino’s father, Bob Sr., said that Petrino has been thinking about Louisville too.

“He told me this weekend he would like the opportunity to coach at Louisville again,” Bob Sr. said Monday. “He said that he’s been everywhere, the NFL and everywhere else, and he said probably the biggest mistake he’d ever made as a coach was leaving Louisville.”

Since leaving Louisville for a brief stint with the Atlanta Falcons in 2007, Petrino coached at Arkansas from 2008-2011 and is currently the coach at Western Kentucky. Petrino’s time at Arkansas ended unceremoniously after he was fired for misleading Arkansas officials about a relationship with a mistress on his football staff.

Petrino went 41-9 during his time at Louisville and after an 8-4 season at Western Kentucky, it appears that Petrino’s past successes could make him Jurich’s pick to replace Charlie Strong. Bob Sr. certainly thinks he deserves the shot.

“I don’t think there’s any other place in the world where (Bobby) can do the things he can do in Louisville,” Bob Sr. said. “I don’t think there’s any question, if he was offered this job, he’d take it.”
