Animal Kingdom + 2011 Kentucky Derby, Barry Irwin, owner of 2011 Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom, said he has considered declaring the horse’s racing career over and sending him to stud.
After all, Animal Kingdom has nearly as many injuries (two) as races (three) since winning the Run for the Roses.
“We’ve talked to some people about selling him as a stallion this year, but in the final analysis I just couldn’t bring myself to do it,” said Irwin, chief of the Team Valor International racing partnership. “I think there’s too much racing left in this horse.”
So as Irwin, trainer Graham Motion and jockey John Velazquez try to win a second straight Derby this week with Went The Day Well, Animal Kingdom is back home in Elkton, Md., at the Fair Hill Training Center recovering from his latest setback.
His connections hope to see him race later this year.
Ivan Rodriguez MLB record for career games as catcher 2, 227, Ivan Rodriguez nickname Pudge, Stolen bases are a primarily associated with the speed of a baserunner, but even more important is the ability to time and read the delivery of a pitcher. If done correctly, baserunners will steal a base far more than they will get thrown out by the catcher. Take for instance, Carlos Beltran(notes), whose career stolen base percentage was 88.1 percent in 328 attempts. Even Lou Gehrig, whose 50.2 percent base stealing percentage ranks as the lowest all-time among those with at least 200 attempts, still successfully stole a base more often than he was thrown out. Thus, a catcher who can effectively throw out baserunners with regularity is an invaluable asset to a baseball team. To lend some perspective to the career numbers below, consider that among active catchers, the average caught stealing percentage is a little north of 30 percent, with Ivan Rodriguez(notes) leading the way, throwing out 45.52 percent of attempted base stealers.
Bobby Petrino Motorcycle accident_Arkansas football coach Bobby Petrino was injured in a motorcycle accident Sunday but did not suffer life-threatening injuries, sources told ESPN's Joe Schad.
A source close to Petrino told Schad the coach has broken ribs, among other injuries, and is "pretty banged up." The 51-year-old is focused and determined to return to practice as quickly as possible, but it could take some time for him to recover, the source said.
In a statement issued through the university, Petrino's family said the coach "is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. Our family appreciates respect for our privacy during the recovery and we are grateful for the thoughts of Razorback fans at this time."
The accident happened Sunday night on Arkansas Highway 16 in Madison County, near the community of Crosses, Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler said. Petrino was operating a motorcycle that left the highway and crashed, Sadler said.
Athletic director Jeff Long said he met with Petrino and his wife, Becky, at a hospital Monday afternoon but disclosed no details of any injuries.
"Coach Petrino is resting comfortably and is encouraged by the progress of his recovery," he said. "I know that he is very much looking forward to returning to spring practice at the earliest opportunity. In the course of our visit, the Petrinos expressed their appreciation for all the thoughts and well wishes that have come in from all over the country."

Thrilla on the Hilla Justin Trudeau, Justin Trudeau has been caricatured, dismissed and mocked for his bravado, belittled by others for the lack of parliamentary acumen he sometimes brings to the game.
But late Saturday night he proved something.
He can punch.
He can lay his ego on the line in a much-hyped charity boxing match and come up big, pummeling his trash-talking opponent, Conservative Senator Patrick Brazeau, into submission.
He proved something else.
“I proved a Liberal can take a punch,’’ Trudeau said, after the bout as he met the media unmarked, barely tousled, not even breathing hard.
It’s was an apt allegory for a party reduced to a Commons rump, a party that has itself been battered, but is still standing.
