The U.S. Olympic Committee has signed the Topps Co. as the exclusive trading card producer of Team USA for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.


The collection will feature the country’s “top Olympians, Paralympians and hopefuls,” including Allyson Felix (track & field), Missy Franklin (swimming), Lolo Jones (track & field), Tatyana McFadden (Para track & field), Michael Phelps (swimming), Jerome Singleton (Para track & field), Hope Solo (soccer) and Shawn Johnson (gymnastics).

Topps said it would release its first Team USA offering in the spring of 2012 in preparation for the upcoming London Games. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Marketing support is expected to include print, Internet and POP.
Topps, best known for its iconic baseball cards, last produced a full set of cards dedicated to the Olympics in 1983 in anticipation of the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles. The 99-card set focused on heroes of the Olympics rather than upcoming participants. Cards included Muhammad Ali, Bruce Jenner, Jim Thorpe, Jesse Owens, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Dorothy Hamil and Jerry West.

A set of cards depicting the 1992 Olympic USA Basketball Dream Team was produced by a company called Impel and included Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley and other team members.


“It is an honor for the company to commemorate the pinnacle of sports and this country’s best athletes,” Doug Kruep, Topps GM of sports & entertainment, said in a statement. “We look forward to offering supporters of Team USA athletes a truly unique keepsake and collectible.”

Topps said that the Team USA collection would be highlighted by the inclusion of 100 gold-medal hopeful cards, 40 of which feature authentic athlete-autographed special versions.
