David Beckham_David Beckham Set to Re-Sign with MLS
David Beckham_David Beckham Set to Re-Sign with MLS_ The Los Angeles Galaxy announced on Jan. 18 that they have re-signed midfielder David Beckham. Beckham's last contract with our side expired on Dec. 31, 2011.
Beckham has been with the Galaxy since signing with the club as MLS' first Designated Player in 2007. Last season was the Englishman's best with the Galaxy and ended with our side hoisting their first MLS Cup since 2005. Beckham had a career-high 15 assists in 2011. In his MLS career, Beckham has 11 goals and 31 assists in 74 matches.
I am very excited to see Beckham return to the club after the way he played last season. I realize L.A. is going to give him plenty of time to prepare for the London Olympics as he wishes to play for Team Great Britain. However, as the deal is for two seasons, the Galaxy should get more than their money's worth out of Beckham.
I am also glad this saga of where Beckham was going to sign to play in 2012 is over. Even before the Galaxy's Asia Pacific Tour was finished, rumors swirled about European clubs that were on the verge of signing Beckham. Ultimately, Beckham decided to go nowhere. He said about his decision, "This was an important decision for me. I had many offers from clubs from around the world, however, I'm still passionate about playing in America and winning trophies with the Galaxy."
Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena is also glad to see Beckham back in a Galaxy kit. He spoke highly about Beckham, stating that "I felt that he was one of the best players in all of MLS last season and we could not have achieved the success that we did without him. We look forward to trying to replicate that success this season with David once again in a Galaxy uniform."
Galaxy fans won't have to wait too much longer to see Beckham on the pitch again. L.A. will be playing in a preseason tournament in Tucson, Ariz. in February. The first home game of the Galaxy's 2012 MLS season is against Real Salt Lake on March 10.
