Mo isom soccer_Former LSU soccer goalie Mo Isom will try to become the first female football player in the SEC when she tries out for the LSU team on Tuesday.
LSU head coach Les Miles did not say how long Isom's try out will last and won't comment on players who are trying out until they make the roster or get cut. Isom said on her Facebook page that the try out will last three days.
"(I'm) absolutely overwhelmed and humbled by all of the amazing support that has been pouring in surrounding tryouts. There is so much power in prayer, so please know that I truly appreciate every single one of you! Today is the first of a 3-day tryout, so I would appreciate continued prayer through this week."
This is no publicity stunt for our Tigers involving the first student-athlete Homecoming Queen. Isom worked out with the football team last September and said last November that she intended to try out for the team. Isom practiced both kickoffs and field goals.
While Isom is trying to become the first female football player in the SEC, she wouldn't be the first female to play on the FBS level. Katie Hnida previously made the Colorado and New Mexico rosters as a kicker. Hnida was also the first woman to score a point in an FBS game when she kicked two extra points in a game for New Mexico in 2003.
In four seasons playing goalie for the soccer team, Isom did a very good job of keeping opponents off the scoreboard and established herself as one of the best goalkeepers in the SEC. Isom also scored a goal on BYU from 90 yards out (see the goal here). The broadcast journalism major also took on a series of LSU athletes, including LSU punter Brad Wing, in skills competitions for her "Meaux Vs." series (see the Wing episode here). While the videos were done in good fun, Isom did make a 51-yard field goal while working out with the football team last fall.
LSU has established starters at both the placekicker (Drew Alleman) and punter (Wing) positions going into 2012. James Hairston handled kickoffs last season and had 16 touchbacks. If Isom makes the team it will be as a backup.
As an LSU fan, I wish Isom luck on her try out. She was a great player for the soccer team and a fine representative of the university.
