Cro-Mags stab bite,The Cro-Mags founding member Harley Flanagan was arrested Friday, July 6 after allegedly stabbing and biting current members of the lineup as they prepared to go onstage at Webster Hall as part of the CBGB Festival.Flanagan made his way through the crowd to the VIP section where the band’s dressing room was located. Brandishing a hunting knife, Flanagan managed to stab bass player Michael Couls, slashing him in the side and arm. According to the police report, William Berario was also slashed and bitten on the hand. Both Couls and Berario were rushed to a nearby hospital, their wounds not life-threatening.
Security was able to restrain Flanagan, who sustained a broken leg during the scuffle and was taken to the hospital though not before shutting the performance down and flipping the crowd off.
Flanagan, 45, faces charges of second degree assault and a weapons charge.
Cro-Mags lead singer John Joseph McGowan spoke with The New York Times, describing Flanagan’s relationship with the band as a difficult one since leaving in 2000, with no possibility of return.
“This dude has been a negative thorn in the side of this band forever,” Joseph said. “I hope he gets what’s coming to him.”
Organizers of the CBGB Festival, which runs through Sunday, July 8, issued the following statement: “We are saddened to learn about the events that occurred last night at Webster Hall. Our primary concern is always the safety and experience of New Yorkers, music fans and the general public. Naturally we will fully cooperate with law enforcement while hoping for the speedy recovery of those injured."
