Diahann Carroll Emmys-Kerry Washington made history this with her Emmy nomination for Best Actress in a Drama series — the first in 18 years — but fellow history-making actress Diahann Carroll says African-American thespians still have a ways to go.

"I feel we're a little behind, we need to catch up," Carroll told theAssociated Press Sunday on the Emmys red carpet.

Carroll, who presented with Washington on Sunday's telecast, became the first African-American to earn an Emmy nomination in 1969 for her role in Julia. If Washington had won on Sunday, she would have become the first African-American actress to win in that category. However, she lost to Homeland's Claire Danes.

"We're all very grateful to the Emmys because they've been on our side," Carroll said, in reference to the show's recognition of African-Americans. "At the same time, we'd like it to be a little more with what's going on in the world."
