In 2001, the couple started going to the Beverly Hills Courthouse every February to request a marriage license which every year was denied. Tyler and Olson became lead plaintiffs in the lawsuit that led the state Supreme Court to strike down the same-sex marriage ban in 2008, allowing thousands of same-sex couples to legally marry from May to November when passage of Proposition 8 changed the state constitution to again ban gay marriages, leaving an estimated 18,000 married couples in a legal limbo. The California Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments and related court petitions seeking to overturn Proposition 8 on March 5.
