Robin Tyler and Diane Olson + first to receive marriage license + June 2008, FEBRUARY 13: Robin Tyler (L) and Diane Olson (R), the first two women to be legally married in Southern California, exchange rings as they renew their wedding vows on the steps of the Beverly Hills Courthouse,
where they were married on June 16, on Valentines Day eve, February 13, 2009 in Beverly Hills, California. In 2001, the couple started going to the Beverly Hills Courthouse every February to request a marriage license which every year was denied. Tyler and Olson became lead plaintiffs in the lawsuit that led the state Supreme Court to strike down the same-sex marriage ban in 2008, allowing thousands of same-sex couples to legally marry from May to November when passage of Proposition 8 changed the state constitution to again ban gay marriages, leaving an estimated 18,000 married couples in a legal limbo. The California Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments and related court petitions seeking to overturn Proposition 8 on March 5.
