Halle Berry's engagement ring from fiancée Olivier Martinez was anything but easy to create. Martinez first sought out Robert Mazlo, his neighbor in Paris, to help design the ring. At the time, he was not told he was designing an engagement ring for the famous actress Halle Berry, but now he is "touched to be involved in [the couple's] story," he told People.

Mazlo began with one of the finest emeralds he could find in Colombia. The "one-of-a-kind piece" has a 4-carat stone, found in "closed-down mines in Muzo, Colombia and the color is perfect," says Mazlo's jewelry house.

They Mazlo described the ring's hue as a "perfect" balance between blue and green. In addition, the main emerald is flanked by two diamonds, set in textured yellow-gold as per Phoenician stylings.

The stones aren't the only things exclusive to Halle's engagement ring, however. Hidden symbols, codes, and meanings have been attributed to the ring, "[symbolizing] the couple's story," said the design house.

Reports surfaced that Martinez took an "alchemy test" to help with the secrets embedded in the ring, according to Zee News. The answers to seven mysterious questions were "decoded" by Mazlo and placed in the ring, reported the site.

The jewelry house associated with Mazlo confirmed that obscure symbols were placed on the ring, available only to the wearers.

"The ring is textured and contains codes and symbols which you cannot see … only the person wearing it can," the designers told People. "It's very uncommon. The symbols and codes represent [the couple's] story and only they can interpret it."

The expensive, exclusive ring has been the subject of some controversy, as another jeweler, Guhran, attempted to take credit for the design. As Mazlo designers have been creating jewelry for "kings and queens for many centuries," according to Martinez, stealing the credit was an insult.

The actor set the record straight with the Miami Herald.

"There is a jeweler taking credit for doing the ring and it's a lie," said the actor, according to the Herald. "They have nothing to do with this."

Martinez proposed to Berry, and confirmed the rumors of marriage in South Beach while promoting his restaurant, Villa Azur. No wedding date has been announced yet.
