5 children die in wreck

by umer | 11:44 PM in |

5 children die in wreck, Five young siblings and one adult died early Saturday when a sport utility vehicle went off an eastern Mississippi road and plunged into a rain-swollen creek, authorities said.

Neshoba County Sheriff Tommy Waddell said the victims appear to have drowned after their Dodge Durango left a county road 20 miles southeast of Philadelphia just after midnight Saturday.

Deputy County Coroner Marshall Prince identified the five children who died as 9-year-old Dasyanna John, 8-year-old Duane John, 7-year-old Bobby John, 4-year-old Quinton John, and 18-month-old Kekaimeas John. Family friend Diane Chickaway, 37, also died. The sheriff said all were members of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and lived in the Pearl River community east of Philadelphia, where the tribe operates a large casino complex.

The father of the children, Dewayne John, escaped the vehicle and remains hospitalized for hypothermia and water inhalation. The children's mother, Deanna Jim, and Chickaway's husband, Dale Chickaway, also survived. The group was traveling to Conehatta, another Choctaw community, with Dewayne John driving. Waddell said he has been tested to see if he was under the influence of alcohol, though he said official results aren't in. If officials decide to file charges, Waddell said they probably wouldn't act until Wednesday.

It appears none of the nine occupants of the vehicle were wearing seat belts or were in child restraints, the sheriff said.

"It's always sad to hear of the death of a tribal member, but today our tribe experienced a great tragedy with the loss of six beautiful Choctaw souls. I cannot begin to imagine what the friends, relatives and loved ones are feeling," Tribal Chief Phyliss J. Anderson said in a statement. "There are no words that can express our sincere condolences to such a horrific accident. I join many of you in the outpouring display of love and support shown to the families during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them."

Roberto Clemente death

by umer | 11:43 PM in |

Roberto Clemente death, Hall of Fame slugger Roberto Clemente died 40 years ago on New Year's Eve, and MLB Network is running a video to help us remember his impact. You can watch it above. You probably already know a lot of the background. Clemente was killed with four others in a plane crash as they tried to get food and other supplies from his native Puerto Rico to earthquake-ravaged Nicaragua. He was just 38 years old and finished with exactly 3,000 hits in his Major League Baseball career.

Clemente's premature end is sort of the "Day the Music Died" for baseball fans. Even if you didn't have a chance to see Clemente play, it chokes you up. It certainly makes you wonder what might have been, if he had lived. The Hall of Fame waved its five-year waiting period — something it had done only for Lou Gehrig — and Clemente was admitted to Cooperstown the summer following his death. The first big baseball star from Latin America, Clemente is considered a Jackie Robinson-type figure to many.

But did you also know that Neil Walker, the Pirates second baseman today, might not be here if not for Clemente?

Among those interviewed in the video — along with the likes of countryman Orlando Cepeda and teammate Steve Blass — was Tom Walker, a friend of Clemente's who played with him in winter ball, and who wanted to help Clemente get supplies to Nicaragua on New Year's Eve 1972:

"Forty years later, I think of a man that, probably, saved my life," Tom Walker said. "He said, ‘No, you need to go back and enjoy the evening.’ And I can’t help but think about that now. I’ve had four wonderful children and, it turns out that one of them is the second baseman for the Pittsburgh Pirates. And if you look at the right-field wall (at PNC Park), it’s the Clemente Wall. It’s got his number, 21, and I’m sure that my son Neil comes out of the dugout and goes out to second base … he’s got to see that wall everyday."

Clone perfect Christmas tree

by umer | 11:23 PM in |

Clone perfect Christmas tree, The hunt for the perfect Christmas tree may soon become a lot easier: just pick a nice clone.

That's what German scientists are now working on: They are searching a way to ensure that the sensitive saplings of the popular Nordmann fir species grow into impressive specimens.

The fir is native to the Caucasus, but is often cultivated on massive plantations in Germany.

Biologist Kurt Zoglauer of Berlin's Humboldt University said Friday 40 percent of trees don't make the cut when they mature after 10 to 14 years. Some are stunted by frost, while others turn out the wrong shade of green.

Zoglauer's team therefore hopes to refine a method to clone particularly hardy and beautiful trees by 2016.

The project is supported by a German government grant.

Tom Cruise girlfriend

Tom Cruise girlfriend,From the silver screen to the dating scene, it looks like Tom Cruise may be back in action.

Just six months after his divorce from Katie Holmes, the “Jack Reacher” star has reportedly been on the lookout for ladies. Among them is 26-year-old restaurant manager Cynthia Jorge.

According to the New York Post, Jorge, a Queens, N.Y., native, was seen dirty dancing with Cruise at a night club, after reportedly slipping him her business card earlier this week.

“Tom Cruise is somebody who has been obviously in the past very open about his relationships,” said People magazine staff writer Kristen Mascia. “He loves being in love. He’s declared that in the past and when the time comes, maybe he’ll tell that to us, but for now he’s just getting used to single life.”

But Jorge isn’t the only rumored love interest in Cruise’s life. The 50-year-old star was reportedly seen in Sweden last week getting cozy with Jennifer Akerman, whose sister, Malin, starred opposite Cruise in “Rock of Ages.”

“Good Morning America” reached out to Cruise’s reps, who deny he’s dating either beauty.

“All sources are telling us that he is single. He’s continuing to prioritize his family and his work. He’s certainly been social. That’s the way he is and he likes being out and about,” Mascia said.

As for his ex-wife, Holmes, she seems to be leading a much quieter existence. The only love she’s been spotted with lately is her and Cruise’s 6-year-old daughter, Suri.

Gang-rape victim dies

Gang-rape victim dies, Police in the Indian capital were bracing for fresh demonstrations after doctors from Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth hospital where the 23-year-old victim was being treated said she “passed away peacefully” on Saturday morning local time.

“Her family and officials from the High Commission of India were by her side. The Mount Elizabeth Hospital team of doctors, nurses and staff join her family in mourning her loss,” said Kelvin Loh, the chief executive of the hospital.

Mr Loh said that despite all efforts from a team of eight specialists at the hospital, she “suffered from severe organ failure” following the injuries to her body and brain.

“She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome,” he said.

“We are humbled by the privilege of being tasked to care for her in her final struggle.”

New protests are expected in the Indian capital on Saturday over the government's handling of the issue despite appeals for calm and constructive mourning from the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.

Harry Carey Jr. dies

by umer | 1:55 AM in |

Harry Carey Jr. dies, a venerable character actor who was believed to be the last surviving member of director John Ford's legendary western stock company, died Thursday. He was 91.

Carey, whose career spanned more than 50 years and included such Ford classics as "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" and "The Searchers," died of natural causes in Santa Barbara, said Melinda Carey, a daughter.

"In recent years, he became kind of the living historian of the modern era," film critic Leonard Maltin told The Times on Friday. "He would get hired on films by young directors who just wanted to work with him, to be one step away from the legends. Some hired him to just hear his stories between takes."

Director Joe Dante, who used Carey in his 1984 comic-fantasy "Gremlins," told The Times in 2003: "You got a lot of free movie history when you cast him."

The son of silent-film western star Harry Carey Sr. and his actress wife, Olive, Carey made more than 100 films. They included "Red River," "Beneath the 12-Mile Reef," "Big Jake," "Cahill U.S. Marshal," "The Long Riders," "The Whales of August" and 1993's "Tombstone."

The boyishly handsome Carey lacked the screen-dominating star quality of his longtime pal and frequent co-star, John Wayne. Instead, Carey brought a rare authenticity to his westerns as one of Hollywood's best horsemen.

That was amply illustrated in 1950's "Rio Grande," for which he and cowboy-turned-character actorBen Johnson learned to ride two horses while standing up, with one foot on the back of each horse.

Family two consecutive Christmas babies,The Houston family has more ways to celebrate on December 25 than they can count.

Monique and Jeremy Houston Sr. decided Christmas Day was the perfect time to get married in 2010.

Exactly one year later, they welcomed their first child into the world, Jeremy Jr.

And you guessed it -- on Tuesday, another Christmas baby, Jeremiah Anthony Houston, was born at 8:36 a.m. at MetroSouth Medical Center.

"I feel like I won the lottery," mother Dominique Houston said.

"I just can't escape Christmas. I love Christmas."

The couple says they didn't do anything special to be blessed with two Christmas babies -- it just turned out that way.

"It did change my perspective on Christmas," the proud dad said. "I've got something I can cherish for the rest of my life."

"I say it was all in the plan. God knew what he was gonna do for us before we even knew what he was gonna do," grandmother Belinda Biloche said.

It obviously runs in the family. The newborns' paternal grandfather was also born on Christmas Day.

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth

by umer | 1:41 AM in |

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth, In June, Miley Cyrus described her co-star in The Last Song, Liam Hemsworth, as a "hot boy."

Now, based on multiple reports, it sounds like the Disney icon has been working up a sweat with the Australian actor - if you know what we mean!

We mean this: the pair has been spotted kissing... off camera!

Both The New York Daily News and People quote witnesses that say Cyrus and Hemsworth played an intense game of tonsil hockey at the Nashville airport on Wednesday.

In fact, actor Alex Emanuel was standing a few feet away and said the rumored couple was "full-on making out." He told People:

"[Miley] jumped into his arms and threw her arms around his neck and kissed him and leaned back and he was dipping her. It was like a scene out of an old movie where the guy's getting on a train and they're saying their goodbyes."

Hero lifeguard drowns

Hero lifeguard drowns, A 23-year-old lifeguard dubbed a hero after Hurricane Sandy drowned this weekend while surfing in Puerto Rico.

Dylan Smith, a 23-year-old lifeguard who was named one of People Magazine’s Heroes of the Year for his actions during Hurricane Sandy, was found dead on Sunday morning near Maria’s Beach in Rincon.

According to CBS, Smith’s body was spotted by local residents. He was rushed back to shore but doctors were not able to resuscitate him.

Smith was included in PEOPLE’s Heroes of the Year this year for saving several people during Hurricane Sandy. The magazine reports that Smith, along with 51-year-old Michael McDonnell, saved six people during the storm with a surfboard and a homemade rope bridge.

Katie Cregg, one of the people who was saved by Smith and 51-year-old Michael McDonnell, said:

“Michael just took charge. He looked me straight in the eye, and I knew then and there we were going to be okay. And then the kid with the surfboard arrived like an angel, and everyone’s spirits lifted.”

FDNY Chief Michael Light, a friend of the hero lifeguard, told the magazine:

“The same sport – the sport of surfing – that he used to save all those people, it’s so shocking that he perished that way.”

Sandy family miracle

by umer | 11:35 PM in |

Sandy family miracle, 'Miracle' for Sandy family, The text from Sister Diane at St. Ignatius Martyr church was as odd as it was urgent: "A man is going to call. You must answer the phone."Kerry Ann Troy had just finished her daily "cry time" — that half-hour between dropping the kids off at school and driving back to her gutted house on New York's Long Island, or to the hurricane relief center, or to wherever she was headed in those desperate days after Sandy, when life seemed an endless blur of hopelessness and worry..................sfgate.

Cellphone reception was sporadic, so even if the stranger called, she would likely miss him. Besides, she had so many other things on her mind.
After spending the first week with relatives in Connecticut, Troy, a part-time events planner for the city, and her husband, Chris, a firefighter, had managed to find a hotel room for a week in Garden City. The couple had no idea where they and their three children — Ryan, 13, Connor, 12, and Katie, 4 — would go next. Hotels were full. Rentals were gone. Their modest raised ranch, a few blocks from the beach, was unlivable.

But the Troys faced another dilemma.
The family had been looking forward to a weeklong, post-Thanksgiving trip to Disney World, paid for by the Make-A-Wish-Foundation to benefit Connor, who suffers from a life-threatening, neuromuscular disease. He had lost one wheelchair to the storm. His oxygen equipment and other medical supplies were damaged by water. He was disoriented and confused.
How could they tell their sick child that the storm that had disrupted his life might also cost him his dream — to meet Kermit the Frog?
Yet Chris Troy felt he couldn't leave. And Kerry Ann said she wouldn't go without him.

A lover of dealmaking, Steinberg rose to Wall Street prominence in the 1960s but ran into health and financial difficulties by 2000. His death was announced on Friday by CNBC, where his daughter-in-law Maria Bartiromo is a presenter.

Steinberg is survived by a wife and six children, including Bartiromo's husband Jonathan, the CEO of asset management firm WisdomTree Investments Inc . Steinberg gradually moved into obscurity after he suffered a stroke in 1995 and the conglomerate he created filed for bankruptcy in 2001.

Kardashian's cat dies, Kim Kardashian's cat died, according to multiple reports. It's always very sad when a pet dies since they are often like members of the family, but it wasn't technically her cat anymore. Mercy the kitten was a gift from the reality television star's rapper boyfriend Kanye West. However, the buxom brunette discovered she was allergic to the pretty kitty shortly after receiving it, and she had to find the little furball a new home.

Kim Kardashian alerted her fans to the cat's death in a blog post called "Rest In Peace, Little Mercy" dated Dec. 7, 2012. She wrote, "It is with deep sadness that I have to tell you all that my kitten, Mercy, has passed away. My heart is completely broken. . . . It broke not only my heart that little Mercy died at only four months old, but Sydney’s too. Mercy was a gentle and loving kitten and we are all going to miss her so much. Thanks to Sydney for making Mercy’s short life one filled with love."

Sydney Hitchcock is Khloe Kardashian's assistant and the new owner of the Persian teacup kitten. It was Hitchcock's boyfriend who discovered that Mercy was in distress and the couple who sought medical treatment for the feline, reported The Huffington Post. "Hitchcock's boyfriend called to tell her [Sydney] Mercy was limp and not moving. They rushed her to an animal hospital where veterinarians made the terrible diagnosis -- a fatal virus, which acts like a cancer, had attacked Mercy's stomach."

Secret files on aliens

Secret files on aliens, "Men in Black" agents K and J may be about to recruit a new Russian assistant: Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

Medvedev has spoken about top secret files on aliens that may have landed in Russia.

In footage recorded Friday after a television interview, the former president joked that each Russian leader gets two folders with information about extraterrestrials that visited our planet — and stayed here.

Unseen on camera footage, he is heard telling a Ren TV journalist he could not tell "how many of them are among us, because it may cause panic." He said more details could be found in Barry Sonnenfeld's "Men in Black" films.

During his 2008-2012 presidency, Medvedev showed a sense of humor slightly more subtle than Putin's sometimes brutal jokes.

Details about the tragedy are still scarce at this time, with police refusing to offer more to the press.

“The boy was killed in the gun store’s parking lot, and scant details about the way the scene unfolded have been released. The 7-year-old was strapped in a booster seat at the time of the presumably accidental shooting,” the Inquisitr writes.

Cadet Quits Over Religion

by umer | 7:09 AM in |

Cadet Quits Over Religion,A cadet is reportedly quitting West Point over religion less than six months before he is scheduled to graduate, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Blake Page explained that his clinical depression played a role in decision to quit the military academy. He went on to say the unconstitutional focus of religion in the military was also instrumental in his decision to leave West Point behind.

“I’ve been trying since I found that out: What can I do? What can I possibly do to initiate the change that I want to see and so many other people want to see?” the cadet explained to The Associated Press. “I realized that this is one way I can make that change happen.”

Page explained that cadets who don’t put an emphasis on religion were deemed “heathens” by instructors. One individual reportedly told Page that he would never be an officer until he “filled the hole in his heart.” West Point Spokeswoman Theresa Brinkerhoff insists that prayer and religious activities are voluntary.

“I don’t want to be a part of West Point knowing that the leadership here is OK with just shrugging off and shirking off respect and good order and discipline and obeying the law and defending the Constitution and doing their job,” Page explained.

Space Spider Dies in D.C. Nefertiti

by umer | 7:07 AM in |

Space Spider Dies in D.C. Nefertiti, A so-called space spider has died in Washington D.C. According to reports the famous spider named "Nefertiti" has died at the Smithsonian Museum on Monday, Dec. 3.

The spider was sent into space earlier this year, orbiting the cosmos for 100 days. The spider successfully survived the entire journey and time in space, and when it returned to Earth was placed in the Smithsonian "InsectZoo" exhibit, where it lived out its final days.

The Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History wrote on itsofficial Facebook page this week: "It is with sadness that we announce the death of Nefertiti, the 'Spidernaut.'

This morning [Dec. 3], before museum hours, a member of the Insect Zoo staff discovered Neffi had died of natural causes. Neffi lived for 10 months. The lifespan of the species ... can typically reach up to one year."

Nefertiti in fact only managed to live a few days in the Insect Zoo exhibit before dying this week.

The death was unexpected but was not a major surprise, according to those in the know. As the Facebook announcement explained, the spider's average life span was only expected to be about 12 months, and

Nefertiti was already 10 months old. It is not thought that the space travel had any detrimental affect on the spider's health and was not the reason for its death.

Parents enclose a small fee of just $9.95, and little Johnny or Jane receives a personalized letter back from the "big man" himself. By 2009, Santa Mail had responded to nearly 300,000 children. At close to $10 a letter, well, you can do the math - needless to say, it was a little idea that has earned Reese a big return.

Real Snake On A Plane Landing

by umer | 7:23 AM in |

Real Snake On A Plane Landing, A snake was found on a commercial flight which forced pilots to make an emergency landing. An EgyptAir flight from Cairo to Kuwait had an unexpected surprise when a passenger was bit by a snake.

The reptile was smuggled on board by Akram Abdul Latif, a 48-year-old reptile shop owner from Jordan. Latif apparently had put the snake in his carry-on luggage to bypass security.

Passengers became terrified after they saw the snake. Latif was trying to keep the snake calm in his bag when it bit his finger and started to crawl under the seats of other passengers.

When the pilots were alerted that one of the 90 passengers had been bit, they decided to land at a nearby airport to get the victim treated, according to CNN.

The snake turned out to be an Egyptian cobra which has deadly venom that can kill a full-grown man in less than 15 minutes. The venom causes paralysis and nerve tissue damage with death resulting from a shutdown on the victim'srespiratory system.

Merriam Webster Words Of The Year

by umer | 7:18 AM in , |

Merriam Webster Words Of The Year,At first blush, the late North Korean leader Kim Jong-il would appear to have little in common with Keith Olbermann, Steve Jobs and Moammar Gadhafi. (Well, maybe a little in common with Gadhafi. But stay with us here for a minute.)

Despite their distinct characters and contributions to the larger world, however, all four men earned the label "mercurial" in such numbers as to send online dictionary searches for the word through Merriam Webster's virtual roof in the days following their newsmaking.

"The word had four huge spikes this year and it's been fascinating to connect it with the news," says Peter Sokolowski, editor at large at Merriam Webster. "Mercurial as perfectionist for Steve Jobs, as performer for Olbermann, as madman for Gadhafi and as dictator for Kim Jong-il."

Sokolowski and his Merriam Webster colleagues track which words generate the most user lookups by the hour, day, month and year. As the year winds to a close, they compile an annual top 10 list of words most frequently queried (merriam-webster.com/info/2011words.htm).

Real-Life Popeye Arms

by umer | 10:28 PM in |

Real-Life Popeye Arms, Massachusetts bodybuilder Moustafa Ismail, nicknamed the real-life Popeye, has the world's biggest arms - and he insists those things are all-natural.

As natural as anything bolstered by seven pounds of protein, nine pounds of carbohydrates and three gallons of water each day can be, at least.

Skeptics say there must also be steroids or some other artificial means behind Ismail's beyond-bulging biceps and triceps, which measure 31 inches around.

The Guinness World Records is waffling on whether to recognize him.

Moustafa Ismail swears he's legit, though, and that his arms are the result of a punishing workout regimen he started because of a guest at his uncle's wedding.

At the event, in his native Egypt, his overweight frame was mocked.

"They call me Popeye, the Egyptian Popeye," Ismail, 24, said, but unlike the cartoon character's love for veggies, "I like chicken, beef, anything but spinach."

It's not easy having the world's biggest arms. He also takes mineral and vitamin supplements and drinks plenty of water to flush out his system.

The controversy that ensued when Guinness decided to recognize his world's biggest arms - and critics alleged steroid use - has dogged him since, he admits.

Clothes shopping is also a chore. The rest of Ismail is average, so it's touch finding shirts that fit without making him look like a little kid playing dress-up.

Kanye West Deposed

by umer | 10:18 PM in |

Kanye West Deposed,Kanye West Deposed In Kim Kardashian / Kris Humphries Divorce ,Kanye West gets deposed for his involvement with Kim Kardashian in a divorce proceeding with Kris Humphries, and it’s been difficult for the singer and his reality star girlfriend to move on as the NBA player tries to fight the annulment.

Superior Court Judge Stephen Moloney told attorneys for Kardashian and Humphries to return to court in mid-February to set a trial date to either dissolve or annul the couple’s 72-day marriage. He didn’t set a deadline for depositions and other pre-trial investigation to be completed, but indicated a trial could be held early next year if it is ready by Feb. 15.

Humphries, a power forward for the Brooklyn Nets, is seeking an annulment based on fraud, but his attorney says he needs more time to collect documents from companies that handle Kardashian’s reality shows.

Kardashian is seeking a traditional divorce and her attorney Laura Wasser has cited both the marriage’s short duration and a prenuptial agreement as reasons for why it should be quickly resolved.

“I don’t think his client has a fraud case,” Wasser said in court of Humphries’ attorney. “I think there’s a fishing expedition going on here.”

Humphries’ attorney Marshall Waller said he needed to be sure he had documents from E! Entertainment and NBC Universal before deciding the scope of his case, but that he was narrowing it down.

Man charged with pretending to do witchcraft, Toronto police have charged a man with pretending to practise witchcraft after they say a woman paid thousands of dollars for help with various ailments.

It is alleged that a man advertised his services as a "healer" in radio and print ads and that a 56-year-old woman contacted him for help with her ongoing physical problems.

Police say the man used spells and rituals to convince the woman that she and her family were cursed and that he could remove the curse for a sum of money.

They say the woman paid about $14,000 for what they called "various services."

Gustavo Valencia Gomez, 40, of Mississauga, Ont., is charged with fraud over $5,000, false pretences over $5,000 and possession of the proceeds of crime, as well as pretending to practise witchcraft.

Police say Gomez publishes a Spanish language newspaper called "el Negocia Redondo” which advertises his services in Toronto, London, Ont., and Montreal, and they believe there may be more victims in Ontario and Quebec.
Gomez is scheduled to appear in a Toronto court on Dec. 28.

Bigfoot DNA

by umer | 12:45 AM in |

Bigfoot DNA, Genetic testing confirms the legendary Bigfoot is a human relative that arose some 15,000 years ago — at least according to a press release issued by a company called DNA Diagnostics detailing supposed work by a Texas veterinarian.

The release and alleged study by Melba S. Ketchum also suggests such cryptids had sex with modern human females that resulted in hairy hominin hybrids -- but the scientific community is dubious about her claim.

"A team of scientists can verify that their five-year long DNA study, currently under peer-review, confirms the existence of a novel hominin hybrid species, commonly called 'Bigfoot' or 'Sasquatch,' living in North America," the release reads.

"Researchers' extensive DNA sequencing suggests that the legendary Sasquatch is a human relative that arose approximately 15,000 years ago."

For her study, Ketchum obtained three "whole nuclear genomes from purported Sasquatch samples.

The genome sequencing shows that Sasquatch mtDNA is identical to modern Homo sapiens, but Sasquatch nuDNA is a novel, unknown hominin related to Homo sapiens and other primate species."

(Mitochondrial DNA, or mtDNA, is the DNA that resides in the cell's energy-producing structures, and is typically passed down from mothers, while nuclear DNA, nuDNA, resides in the cells' nuclei and is passed down from both parents to offspring.)

So where's the evidence? Well, there is none. Not yet, anyway: Ketchum's research has not appeared in any peer-reviewed scientific journal, and there's no indication when that might happen.
