If 30-minute meals with Jamie or domestic goddessdom with Nigella fail to tempt this evening then it might be worth considering the latest big thing in home cuisine, Cooking with Poo, which has just won the Diagram prize for the oddest book title of the year.

Marie Colvin Killed in Syria, Respected American war reporter Marie Colvin, who covered conflicts from Sri Lanka to Syria and stood up for the importance of independent journalism, died in a shelling attack in Syria on Wednesday. She was in her 50s.
Known for getting close to the story and for courage behind the front lines, Colvin had been holed up in the besieged city of Homs. She died alongside French photojournalist Remi Ochlik, the French government announced.

Leslie Carter, Sister of Nick & Aaron, Dies at 25, Singer Leslie Carter, the sister of Aaron Carter and Backstreet Boys/NKOTBSB singer Nick Carter, was found dead Tuesday in upstate New York. She was 25.

Actor James Farentino Dies After Long Illness, Actor James Farentino, who appeared in dozens of movies and television shows, died Tuesday in a Los Angeles hospital, according to a family spokesman. He was 73.

Farentino died of heart failure at Cedars-Sinai Hospital after a long illness, said the spokesman, Bob Palmer.

Farentino starred alongside Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen in the 1980 science fiction film "The Final Countdown." The movie featured a modern aircraft carrier that travels back in time to Pearl Harbor hours before the Japanese attack.

Farentino also starred opposite Patty Duke in 1969's "Me, Natalie."

In 1967, he won a "Most Promising Newcomer" Golden Globe for his performance in the comedy "The Pad and How to Use It."

He also had recurring roles on "Dynasty," "Melrose Place," "The Bold Ones: The Lawyers" and "ER," playing the estranged father to George Clooney's character.

In 1978, he was nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal of Saint Peter in the television mini-series "Jesus of Nazareth."

A four-time divorcee, Farentino's tumultuous personal life made headlines, too.

In March 1994, he pleaded no contest to stalking his ex-girlfriend Tina Sinatra, daughter of Frank Sinatra.

Bill Conlin reportedly resigns amid child-molestation charges, Deadspin reported Tuesday that iconic Philadelphia Daily News sportswriter Bill Conlin had resigned amid charges of child molestation. Nancy Phillips of the city’s rival Philadelphia Inquirer broke the story, according to Deadspin.

Conlin, who has covered golf and other sports since joining the Daily News in 1965, had reportedly hired a lawyer and intended to fight the charges, Deadspin said. Conlin and Phillips did not immediately respond to requests for comments. Mark Block, a spokesperson for the parent company of both Philadelphia papers, declined to comment until he did "more fact-checking." Block also would not confirm or deny an NBC 10 report that Conlin had retired and not resigned.

Conlin received the National Baseball Hall of Fame’s J.G. Taylor Spink Award, a lifetime achievement award for baseball writers, in July. More to come as this unfortunate story unfolds.

John Lewis Hart, a firefighter’s son, was born Feb. 18, 1931, in Endicott, N.Y. As a child, he said he drew “funny pictures, which got me in or out of trouble depending on the circumstances.”

After high school, he served in the Air Force in Korea and produced cartoons for Pacific Stars and Stripes.

The Saturday Evening Post, Colliers and True magazines later published his freelance cartoon submissions while Mr. Hart worked in the art department at General Electric in Johnson City, N.Y. While at GE, he created “B.C.” and based many of the characters and their quirks on his friends and family.
